Re: Section Infantry Weapons
They aren’t even nearly comparable. The rifles are totally different. The ballistics are completely different. The training requirements due to the recoil are totally different and the rate of fire is totally different. To operate a 338lapua to its full potential it requires two operators. Differen...

Re: French Armed Forces
EBRC Jaguar is a disaster? It was said in the French senate in March that the turret was not stabilised due to a software issue and would not be resolved until mid-2024. Further concerns were raised about the delivery of vehicles out to 2030. I'm paraphrasing this robo-voice video. I don't have the ...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons
Totally different ball game. Nope. Still a bullet. Suppressing fire is best provided by the minimi and GPMG. The designated marksman is providing harassing fire and neutralising threats. If the 5.56 was replaced by a more capable 6.5 round the designated marksman role would be obsolete overnight. B...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
Apparently the CTA40 turret on the Jaguar is not stabilised yet and is pending a software upgrade before it can fire on the move. I don't have the link it came off one of those automated YouTube videos that pulls the publication from a french government publication. It is expected to be upgraded ne...

Re: Section Infantry Weapons
Do you want your designated marksman to actually hit something or just miss it by a smaller margin? Breaking down link will ensure the later. Then why compromise with 6.5CM? Give them .338 the best they can get. Missing by a smaller margin is called suppressing fire, and it's often an acceptable ou...

This is interesting, a lot of people think Ajax is too big for Recon. People have mentioned Jaguar as an other way of doing things....turns out that Jaguar is a bit of a monster as well... https://twitter.com/TotherChris?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor This is news to people?...

I'd hope so too. That would put them ahead of the curve in many respects, but already going 6.5 disconnects from 7.68/6.8, might as well go all in. Especially if it can be converted to either in the case we end up slaved to in-theatre US supply chains.

Absolutely bonkers decision unless they're adopting it for a LMG too.Andy-M wrote: ↑22 Sep 2023, 09:36 The Royal Marines have adopted not only another new rifle, but a new calibre as well, 6.5 Creedmoor.

First Archer systems are delivered to the British Army https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/british-army-accepts-transfer-of-first-archer-dsei23/ First time seeing Archer on Volvo chassis, it's bloody big! The muzzle brake seems quite far back from the front of the vehicle and the rear overhang is huge....

is mass storage of generic artillary shells deemed a complex weapon - from the PoV of the storage sophistication it is awarded? Modern artillery is essentially three parts: Fuze, shell and charge. The fuzes are typically only attached to the shell when the fire mission is known and intended nature ...

Was thinking (dangerous I know)... Does anybody remember the AWD MTL 33 Multidrive artic from the late 80's / early 90's? It was a four wheeler tractor unit with a 4 wheel trailer, the trailer wheels where drive by a prop shaft from the tractor unit, making it all wheel drive. If Supacat does an el...

Ares has room for more seats if the equipment racks are moved out no ? There are IFV variants based on the ASCOD chassis, yes. What British -spec'd equipment/stores would need to be removed to accommodate additional seats is an exercise in itself. ARES isn't carrying any particularly specialist equ...

Quick question(s) if I may - something I've been thinking over, but its got to the point where I actually need to know now ! I understand that Ares is designated as an APC and Warrior an IFV. Firstly what is the largest caliber RWS that could operate on an Ares in theory ? And secondly with that ca...

Well they aren’t spotting for artillery off the coast of Cyprus are they or even in the channel? When you need a qualified pilot to fly the aircraft. They're not operational off Cyprus, it's fair weather flying for training. The channel was the briefest of military support to civilian activity. It ...

Re: Thales Watchkeeper WK450 (British Army)
Well watchkeeper is now more than simply an artillery spotting air vehicle. Is it? One of the most persistent criticisms has been the RA training for pilots/operators, that has been to blame for a number of crashes. Like so many platforms it crosses over cap badges and indeed services. Given the wa...
