Re: The future form of the Army

https://www.joint-forces.com/features/6 ... strike-bct

Article has some more detail on the DRS BCT, and an interesting grahic on how the Brigade assets would deploy at different scales for different operations.

Re: General UK Defence Discussion

Should we be spitting up M270a2 and future SPG? Given the range of the former's missile ranges making it most appropriate to be a divisional asset at more strategic level. Whilst the latter should work more closely with armoured and mechanised units whether we go for Archer or a different SPG at a ...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion

Maybe but for me having 6 Brigades capable of each generating and Battalion battle group at high readiness or deploying as a Brigade without having to rob units from somewhere to fill gaps is the way forward and if and it is a big if the 3rd deployed as a division the commander could move the artil...

Re: The future form of the Army

If the intention is that 1st Div should actually be, y'know, useable , that implies some major changes to Future Soldier. 16th AABCT getting re-subordinated, and the chat about changing how the reserves work suggests that the 19th brigade reserves dumping ground approach might change? A division bas...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)

So, NAO reckons the Army has a requirement for 1300 Boxers.... that's an unbelievable number. That would be like what enough to equip 4 brigades? Exactly, if 623 gets you 5 battalions in two brigades under Future Soldier, and assuming the future artillery gun system either isn't on Boxer or at leas...

In any event, Cunningham famously declared that it took 3 years to build a ship but 300 years to build a tradition.

Seems like we will need to reverse that maxim.

11 years from cutting steel to service seems like an absolutely mental time frame. Is it conceivable that the first of the T31s might beat her into service?

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

It shouldn't be too difficult to create a Mission Module using the turret form Ajax if that was desired. That would incorporate many of the sensors that were to be carried by Ajax and using a spacious Mission Module would allow additional space to be used for additional systems if so desired. A sim...

Commons written answers 17th Oct :- https://questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2022-10-10/59010 Yeah, that doesn't sound particularly promising for it. If you can develop a recce module for Boxer, then do it. Surely you could fit all the kit in Ajax into a Boxer module.

Re: Integrated Review (previously SDSR 2020)

There is very ;ittle left to cui that would not be very visible and cause political chaos. The Army is already too small and barely able to do its core duties, the Navy has the minimum number of escorts it can manage with the number of SSNs definitely too low, and the RAF has been reduced to around...

Re: M270 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS)

If British Army wants to keep 9 systems per battery, for 6 (4 regular + 2 TA), that would require at least 54 units. So probably some 60+ in total should suffice. Presumably if it went the full 100% increase from that tweet they'd be assuming 6 regular batteries? So two full regular 3 battery regim...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Presumably the silence about Ajax is due to legal wrangling about who is footing the bill between GD and the MoD. It'd be nice to think there is also a considerable amount of work already gone into figuring out what will replace the capability. However, the liklihood we are into another 10 year proc...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Feels like the programme has had it, and the only thing left to quibble over is who foots the bill.

Hopefully they can get on with moving armoured recce onto Boxer quickly. Probably the lowest risk means of restoring capability.

But in all honesty, I don't feel like you'd end up swapping out a given weapons/container fit very often.

We must not forget that by 2030 the British Army is looking to become a fully digital and networked force, allow ISTAR date to be freely moved around its units. Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

In my opinion, the current plans for two M270 GMLRS and two 155mm SP Gun Regiments are the absolute bare minimum 3rd (UK) Division should be quipped with. The current small number of Extractor launch trailers need to be replaced with a more modern and capable system and moved down the food chain to...

Be interesting if Australia and The US pursue their loyal Wingman programmes. On the face of it, fairly crap news. Any idea what it was that killed it off? It seems like between this and the earlier Taranis programme there was a decent shot at an unmanned strike asset at least. If thr goal is contin...

Whilst I have reduced my caffeine intake, I agree it would be a good idea for the UK to strengthen the partnership with RBSL, and at the very least try to get its UK sites the primary manufacturing locations for the Tracked Boxer if any orders are forthcoming from countries other then the UK. Yes w...
