Re: Boeing E-7 Wedgetail (RAF)

Since when did we have to do a 'business case' for National Defence? Are the opposition going to be subject to CMA investigationi if they try to 'monopolise' us? All MoD equipment programmes go through several approvals rounds, larger projects above £100m will have the following ; strategic busines...

Nice video, with a zoom all across the ship https://youtu.be/gWkuDjpvx1A?si=R8pv7g1vCo6FlLBr Didn't realise Diamond hadn't had the updated pole mast or it looks like Samson update either as she's missing the slot around the mast below Samson. The updated pole mast is for Shaman which is slowly bein...

Re: Ground Based Air Defence

Very true, but in a swarm scenario do you have enough of your more expensive (and bigger) missiles? Multiple guidance systems could be one option. Maybe the cheap Coyote based ASRAAM system could have the SNEB/HYDRA/CVR7 missiles too, leaving Sky Sabre to the bigger aircraft? ASRAAM is CAMM. ASRAAM...

from what I've seen reported - HMS Defender is due to be handed back in 2027 with HMS Duncan next in line. I'm not certain whether these ships will also receive SV-E Capability 1 at the same time. (Upgrade of missiles to ASTER 30 Block 1 standard and upgrades to SAMPSON and the C2 system)

I believe that the Giraffe 1X has been trialled on the experimental trials ship (the name escapes me at present Blackett ?). The current Terma Scanter radar meets the current requirement and is also used on non military vessels, whereas I expect an ESM system detecting a Giraffe would instantly defi...

Re: Ground Based Air Defence

I noticed a while back that the in-service Sky Sabre launcher vehicles do not have the optronic masts featured on the demonstrators and they don't appear to be set up to be easily retrofitted. That would presumably eliminate the ability of the launchers to act as SAM systems in their own right and ...

Ammo stock is the key to fight against cheap and numerous drones and boats. Surely, Bofors guns are better options. Ukrainian war once again revealed that, "ammo ammo ammo" is the most important thing when it comes to real war. Furthermore, T31's task is to handle gray-zone warfare, so sh...

Range resolution and accuracy is not determined by the transmitting frequency of the radar. It is determined by mainly by the pulse width after processing but is also impacted by such factors as the weighting applied in the pulse compressor to reduce range sidelobes, the quality of the signal sampli...

Seeing some of the earlier posts with reference to programme costs, you still need to careful when quoting NAO reported programme costs. NAO report against approved costs in business cases. So they could easily state that the programme cost has changed from £1.25b to £2b. This will be because additi...

I remember being told years ago by someone (so I cannot confirm whether this is true or folklore), that when the original production contract was signed, the price of the final batch of 100 or 200 missiles was virtually zero as MBDA were fed up with MoD cancelling orders. Therefore there was no fina...

Nick to quote you - The Hunter's larger displacement no doubt driven in part by its heavy and high performance Ceafar radar system fitted on its hexagon shaped deckhouse, not sure how many AESA S-band and X-band GaN planar arrays fitted, but think due to their large area will give it an order magnit...

An increase to 5 would be good news and is very necessary. Allegedly from a friend who knows, the original E-7 programme was made "affordable" based on a series of pretty spurious assumptions regarding savings of not keeping the E-3s upgrading them etc. In old MoD speak definitely a case o...

You have to remember in MoD contracts - fixed price is not fixed, it can vary with changes in inflation or exchange rates or even some commodity prices. Firm prices mean not subject to variation ie fixed in common usage. Even profit rates can vary on the efficiency of the supplier or the assumed ris...

There is a planned programme for each ship to have capability inserted after they are accepted off contract. That will be mte plus any equipment rotated off decommissioned Type 23s. Re: Future Solid Support Ship

The only good thing that has come out of this order is that it is for 3 ships. I 1thought it would be for 2 with an option (never to be taken up) for the third.

I think the build strategy is highly optimistic and the end result will be delays and cost overruns.
