Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
I also wonder how well a Type 31 would have done in shooting down an incoming ballistic missile (see latest RN news). I also wonder how it has now become acceptable to fire ballistic missiles at commercial vessels and the only thing that is discussed is the success of shooting it down. It’s difficu...

https://thinpinstripedline.blogspot.com/2024/04/the-saga-of-norway-and-type-26.html Humphry is being positive on the potential Norway deal, bullish even On the Babcock subject, I don't think there'd be a technical obstacle to Babcock building half a T26, but I assume BAE would want to do all the int...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
I recall the studies for two at a time building showed per u it efficiency gains of the order of 30~40% A significant amount of time is setup - planning the work, sourcing the “kit” from stores, coordinating with the other build teams Building two at a time means you only need to do all that once. T...

Re: MBDA Storm Shadow Missile (RAF)
My understanding is it was always 50/50 workshare but France arguably had more of the "noble" work.
Though given MBDA UK are flat out with CAMM family and Brimstone it wouldn't surprise me if Storm Shadow new build are mainly France.

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Let's not forget the people who actually build them. Everywhere in the UK and every business sector has a shortage of skilled workers. From pharmacies to restaurants to shipyards. The only thing we have too much of is social media bloggers. We won't build more ships or crew them without a radical r...

I suspect the speed limit on boat 1 was first of class issues and re-generating the workforce
On Boat 2 to 3 it was / is Production facilities - non undercover working, lack of an automated plate line etc
From boat 4 onwards it should be basically limited by government cashflow

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Thanks for the input Ove, always good to get other aspects to a story, i hope the optimism concerning a possible buy is warranted as more T26 in the north sea can't be bad, more pluses than minuses imo The more I think about this, once the new Construction Hall is built BAE could practically double...

Re: my T32 idea - Yes I meant Bofors 40mm. I like it because it is the cheapest capable option, and possibly cheap enough to standardise upon across the fleet in favour of the 30mm already in use. Agreed on the "maid of all work", covering all low-end tasks. But it'll still be a milque-to...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
IMHO the problem is state and non state actors are blending into one,the hi/lo distinction is becoming meaningless. I wouldn't be surprised if half of these "Houthi rebels" arrived last month on a flight from Tehran. Everything is being uparmed. T45 are getting CAMM and eventually ABM. T31...

I hope so. Or it might be an election gimmick that gets thrown in the rubbish by the new government. Labour are making positive noises, but who knows.

If I were Typhoon Senior I'd be claiming paternity on the basis of that central intake alone! (Plus the tail and bubble canopy are not that dissimilar)

Over the next few years there are likely to be a large number of Aberdeen ex-oil industry people looking for alternative employment. Not sure how the RFA pay scales line up to their expectations however

Re: Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS)
My guesstimate - T83 will be a late 2030s story, which would align with the RAN's plans. Hobart class will only be 20ish years old in 2040. - MRSS can be integrated at Rosyth with blocks built wherever. Maybe not in the frigate factory but using part of their workforce. - FADS will leverage some pil...

According to the Shipbuilding Strategy, the MRSS decision point is about now, though agreed, SDSR2025 will make the announcement near irrelevant https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6231b9e2e90e070ed32f18ce/_CP_605____National_Shipbuilding_Strategy_Refresh.pdf IMHO it would be hard to make...

Re: Ground Based Air Defence
Well we have a £4bn deal to help Poland build its air defence system, surely "backward integrating " that to the UK would be an efficient place to start. If based initially on CAMM-ER then there would be a series of 80-100km "bubbles" around the country. Then add in CAM-MR to dou...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I'd have thought an upgunned T31 would be very useful for dealing with Houthi drones at the moment. Free up T45 for the Carrier Group. If it's only 3 out of 5 so be it. The other two can do flag flying and maybe end up being sold to Ukraine at mates rates. Domestic license build of a T26 - never gon...

It'll be an interesting one. Airbus DE have no export success with Eurofighter. But then again Rafale has a long waiting list and Dassault don't really do local assembly. Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
There are only two yards that can integrate a complex warship - Scotstoun and Rosyth. And part of Rosyth is needed anyway to refit the carriers. H&W are building a diverse marine engineering business including refit, offshore wind, ferries etc. - not dependent on the MOD. Similarly Cammell/ A&am...
