Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Is T31 really as noisy as it's critics make out? In the run up to T31 and Constellation when an IH based design was possibly in the frame for both, the Danes suggested that IH wasn't a complete bag of spanners. The Absalons are now being turned into ASW frigates with new tails. Babcock have already...

Re: Labour's likely defence policy

For defence it all boils down to the same thing regardless of which party is in power. It needs to formulate its plans and live within its means. That’s being at a min 2% of gdp because both will maintain the nato target. It will float somewhere between that and 2.5% which it has for sometime now. H...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

You would need to overlook where the linage of commandos come from in 41 formed for the raids on the Norwegian and French coasts. Why start the clock in 1941? The commando raids and the invasion of Norway was all Britain could achieve at the time and Churchill wanted “action this day”. RM needs to ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Will the Norwegians really want to replace 4 (+ scrapped Helge Ingstad) GP frigates with 5 ASW? They, more than many, appreciate the Russian threat but is that enough to so radically change their approach to fleet composition? It's not as if they currently have a mix of frigate types. The cynic in ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

We will have a smaller fleet of specialists and potiential a larger group of all rounders in the middle. No sure that’s adequate. If funding remains roughly static a more balanced approach is the likely outcome IMO. - 8x T45/T83 - 8x T26 - 8x T31/T32 The cruiser idea for makes little sense for mult...

Meaning?

The T31s are not Corvettes.
We will have a smaller fleet of specialists and potiential a larger group of all rounders in the middle.

They aren’t and I don’t think Australia will buy corvettes either.

They have been the UKs leads artic and mountain warfare specialists since the war. Apologise to be nit picky but the RM post-war were a sort of East of Suez reserve and only took on the NATO ‘Northern Flank’ following the withdrawal of EoS. Bloody hell, what a choice to make. Nice to see the UK government ham fisted approach to the Type 26 coming back to kick us in the ass again. That positive note I had yesterday lasted less than 24 hours. A British bid to sell submarine-hunting warships to Norway cannot go ahead unless the Royal Nav...

It’s how the likes of the French operate to keep yards open and expand user base. If we are serious about exports and the industrial base it’s what we need to do as well.

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

It did have an asw focus but then the Soviet navy was significantly orders of magnitude bigger and more competent than russias today. It was also being done by ships much more like a type 31/FDI type configuration than a type 26 or even a type 23. The majority of the Cold War ASW frigates were the ...

We do have air defence assets and a fully integrated network. There is anti drone stuf, starstreak, camm, and aster.
