Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Coming back to escorts for a number of the reasons above having the Type 31's dotted around the world fitted and armed with 1 x 57 mm , 2 x 40mm , 24 CAMM , 8 x NSM plus a 8 cell Mk-41 with 8 x Tomahawk Blk-V and one or two helicopters with 20 LMM or 4 Sea Venom or a SF team would give the UK a lot...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

With an increasing multi-polar world with increasingly dominant regional powers, I think it would be naive to think that UK and the US will always have friends that are willing and able to provide operating bases in all the regions where we will need to “fight”. By that matrix it will be naive to t...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

IMO basing rights are going to be a problem if we’re going up against basically anyone other than Russia. In Libya and Syria the vast majority of western AirPower was naval based. If we had to do A’stan again would we be sure of a friendly reception in, say Pakistan? We’re long gone from Iraq. Ukra...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The military issue, is the we must have enough contingency to be able to deploy up to medium scale operation quickly with forces able to defend our or allies territory. The case for the carriers: only they can deploy air power quickly enough. Emm no. The Ukraine conflict yet again has demonstrated ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

… But you question alludes to a bigger strategic point we are ignoring it’s much better to defend territory than have to retake it. The old 3 to 1 ratio required to take land is probably no longer valid, thanks to proliferating tech it is much bigger now maybe 5/6 to 1. I doubt the political will i...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I think it ignores the fact that the carrier groups offensive weapons are basically a 500lb free fall bomb and that’s how it will remain for a number of years. So adding modern anti ship/ land attack missiles to the escorts is overdue. Adding a NSM capability to the T31/T32 won’t reduce the strike ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Great news but where does that leave the Mk41s on the T26? Why 11 sets? Type45 plus the T31s? A T31 with NSM would be starting to get there and it would show the idea of Patrol Frigates was a concept for a different era. Empty?? I would guess as they plan to integrate on type 23 and type 45 it will...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Personally they need to be talking about doing less with the same or less with less to allow contingency to be built up. Spending more time in the pub only invites further cuts. BTW, open your ears, the Navy has been very vocal on how it views its future. You would have thought the start of this ye...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

I’m not entirely sure they do with Germany buying into f35 and typhoon I’m really not sure why they are designing a new manned plane at all. The Germans could simply put the money in loyal wingmen/remote carriers a/c and integrate with a further f35 purchase at a later date. The French need to devel...
