Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Moved across…. The U.K. decided to replace the 3 with 2 carriers in the 30-40k tonnes range sdsr 98! Exactly but we are where we are. The rise in SSN numbers is welcome but not without further funding. If the budget remains the same the Amphib fleet will not be fully replaced in the 2030s when the ...

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)

I’m not sure it’s an embarrassment… Its a complete failure of successive governments. Let’s rewind a little. - The UK had three invincible class aircraft carriers. - The UK decided to replace them with two QE aircraft carriers The U.K. decided to replace the 3 with 2 carriers in the 30-40k tonnes r...

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)

Good choice to keep as an interim ASS IMO. Actually I see it as an embarrassing illustration of how ridiculous recent planning has been. Trying to argue that Ocean had to be sold after only being commissioned for 20 years and then retain Argus until the 2030s is pathetic and indefensible. As a stop...

I don’t think mass is a lesson from Ukraine. The lesson is dispersed precision and exist. If you continue to exist for an air defence capability it changes the calculus of the enemy regardless of your size. Of course for ourselves we’re really talking in a nato context and as a nuclear power state s...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Luckily the carriers we have will be able to operate drones as well as manned fighters. The reality is that the threat from a SSN is invisible whereas a Carrier Strike Group is a visible statement of intent. To be credible we need both. The don’t always come unseen when a message is required to be ...

Re: SSN(R) Future Astute Replacement (2040s) (RN) [News Only]

It seems like this might be a very significant shift in defence strategy. Just as in 97 it was decided carriers were required for power projection it looks like the decision has been made that a shift to SSN is the answer to balancing power in the Pacific and asia. I wonder if the SSN AUKUS will al...
