Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Type 31 will end up costing around 320 to 340 million It will be more, especially if we are comparing like for like with the T26, but that will come out in time Type 31 is not trying to be a frigate it is a frigate and if it comes as above it will be a very good global Patrol frigate A hull does no...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

Incorrect. The budget was fixed by Geo Osborne and his merry troupe of Whitehall warriors in the Treasury. Lot's of good and useful stuff did not fit that budget. Hence the type 31's only being useful for fighting pirates and flying its flag while hosting embassy parties. George Osbourne hasn't bee...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

There has been talk of Mk41 for 18 months now so by the time Type 31 is handed over for fit out in Dec it would be 2 years so of the work has been going on they can be fitted into hull one

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

It should be remembered that between 1998 and 2006 we built a Amphib fleet of

1 x LPH , 2 x LPD,s and 4 x LSD's plus 6 Point class

At the same time maintaining 3 x Light carriers

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

In 98 did anyone think that the 4 B3 Type 22's would go without replacement after just 20 years service I'd imagine they probably wouldn't have minded at all. Back then we were withdrawing Batch 2 Type 22s with as little as 12 years service life at the time! Then again there was the vision back the...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

Oh good Lord, what makes people think that a 6000 t ship, based on a design that can already handle 32 Mk41 tubes, 24 Mk56 tubes and 16 Harpoon deck-mounted launchers CAN'T handle 32 Mk41 tubes, 24 CAMM tubes and 16 NSM FFS - get real folks To be fair the Mk-56 cells on the IH class are were the ne...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

well if we take the 50 million as a figure then all 5 RB2's could be fitted with a 3D radar and 40mm plus be given 2 or 3 Jackal UAV's in a POD each I have no objection apart the liquidation of a Bay to achieve it. If the T23’s are decommissioned without the multi-year refits hundreds of millions o...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Nope, let’s sell one to pay for other things. We need clarity and clear direction, wasting funds differing is just making things worse. Largs Bay was gifted to Australia 12 years ago for £65m. How much “clarity and clear direction” are you going to buy for another £50m? well if we take the 50 milli...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

This is the first real show of change for the FCF and a budget of 200 million is a good start I do like the K70 Sabre however I think a modified Caimen 90 with a roof and 2 x 30mm RWS would be a good fit it has good range speed and carrying

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

If Westminster is in such poor condition as to make refit unviable what about next few ships in line for refit we could start to see a rapid fall in Type 23 numbers the RN will need to keep 8 Type 23 ASW going until they can be replaced by Type 26 but if things get to bad we might need to fit CAPTAS...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

MK41 on T31. Assuming that per 32 (8x4, 8 pack costing ~£12m) costs ~£50m, that is £250m, or 1/8 of inital programme cost and probably 1/10 of eventual programme cost. How does this compare to TA/PS with torpedo launch method (Other than heli's, can include UAV). According to Shephard Media, the co...

https://www.navylookout.com/hms-westminster-refit-suspended-and-her-return-to-service-in-doubt/ If yes, I guess it is now the time to discuss many aspects. 1: I will propose to keep Westminster, while disband 2 of the 3 remaining T23GP to earn money. In this case, "up-arming River B2" can...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I for one just can't see a Type 26 being built for 800 million this being said if Westminster's refit is canned we could see a host of others go the same way this could mean having to speed up the Type 26 build and add 1 more ship to make the class 9 and with all type 31's being in the water by 2028...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The future for T32 will likely be IMO as turbulent as the fiasco of T26 procurement…. It doesn’t need to be. Firstly RN must confirm that it really needs a Frigate with all of that capability packed into it. The simple fact is that only so much can be fitted into a vessel with a beam around 20m. Th...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

It would be fair to say the River class has done well in exports with 5 ships 3 built in the UK and 2 over seas plus Clyde was sold on after service meaning 14 ships built 8 with the RN and 6 with 3 other navies Absolutley but RN and UK PLC needs a next-gen OPV now. Ideally with different variants ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

I think you’re missing the point of what the commandos would be used for. It isn’t about nation building. Not necessarily large scale expeditionary operations either though if you’re not doing large expeditionary operations why are you building an a/c carrier it’s there only use. The use of marines...

I think right now the RN / RM are looking to hold a Battalion battle group at high readiness with the ability to pull a light Brigade together with

30 commando
40 & 45 commando
47 Commando
Commando Logistics Regt
28 & 29 Army Commando Engineer and Artillery

I would agree the this government has no intention of paying for anything

It would also be nice for this government to say what it really wants
