Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The case for 8 T-31's becomes clear if there get there 32 MK-41's as at this point they become real war fighting ships as when fitted with the right weapons they can defend them self and others around them and attack target over 1000km away But then it’s not a C2, you are trying to make it a C1, at...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The hull is not where the cost is in such a vessel and the roles dictate crew numbers. If a C2 design can be built for £100mn, have a core crew of @40 and an availability of 80% I’m all ears. But what capability has it got? it isn't all about cost, crew and availability, the ship has to do somethin...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

For me the balance of Global OPV's and Global GP frigates will be key and if or when T-31 gets their 32 MK-41 VLS they will more than cover the global frigate role as for the global OPV this needs to be a balancing act in and of its self so for me something like what I have been calling for 110 by 1...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Why? if they got a good UAV capable of OTH search and track then this close the gap Simple threat assessment. The Rivers are fine in Littoral areas with helo coverage provided by land based options. Once they start to roam the globe through more dangerous zones they are completely defenceless. RN n...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

….how would the RB2's be changed if they got the NS50 4D radar and the 40mm Bofors main gun It would be an improvement but possibly too much and not enough. The hull really needs a stretch with a hanger added to start to release the full potential for forward basing around the globe. Why? if they g...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Further to recent OPV discussions. https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2023/11/frances-dga-orders-7-new-opv-for-the-french-navy/ 7 new French 2400t OPVs for €900m or £112m unit. A stretched River to 115m LOA and around 2500t at £125m unit certainly looks plausible in comparison. Anyone know the le...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Interesting question from that article in relation to UAV and swarm drones and the use of the 5' guns. Could we see a return of the twin mount guns in a similar role as our WWII predecessors and perhaps more AA guns on escorts or perhaps aircraft carriers themselves? Is 4x DS30M Mark 2 enough for t...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

As said Bulwark will come back on line and work up and then QE will go in for first major dry dock refit and POW will take over the strike carrier role I think there is a big question mark over the future of Bulwark and Albion. Both I think are potentially tempting low hanging fruit for the next Go...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

The Royal Navy should definitely "go there", but not "on as many vessels as possible" as previously advised. For me we should be pushing Camcoptor on the Frigates and OPV's this pushes ISTAR out to 150Km for upto 6 hours maybe I would look at a Sniper quadcopter for the OPV's as...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Why? Compared to a F35 the complexity is of different magnitude. Mojave can be shipped in a crate and operated from austere airstrips. A large but modestly equipped flattop would be more than good enough. Protector needs everything an F35 needs to operate, the pilot is just somewhere else. Austere ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Once the potential of MALE STOL drones is fully understood it will be a high priority to get them on as many vessels as possible. The utility of organic Naval aviation has been understood for decades. Crew or no crew onboard this does no change. The limiting factor is how expensive it is. Operating...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Moved MALE operations in the locations we operate in don’t need to be operated from a ship so having them on the carrier is fine but it’s not a widespread requirement. Protector for example has transatlantic operating reach. This range and endurance is severely restricted when fully loaded. The rat...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Babcock is working with the ROK on its Carrier program is it not also I would of thought the ROK would been on POW for the Mojave test Babcock is working on CVX but a modified Dokdo looks like a better fit for RN. If RN did decide a LHA was required the 40,000t South Korean LPX could be a useful st...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Devils in the detail but it’s difficult to see what assets RN would have regularly available to do this before the T31’s replace the RB2s. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/11/21/britain-south-korea-north-korea-sanctions-navy-patrols/ A RN OPV is simply not suitable for the proposed deplo...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I agree if the US don't buy it it is done and also think it would a far outside shot to get 2 or 3 other countries to come together as even if the UK , Aus and India came together the numbers would still be to small 250 tops However if these 3 countries did come together it might make the USMC take...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Unless the USMC take on V-247 then the only other way is for us to go in with say Australia , India , maybe Spain but not alone the Perfect outcome would be USMC , UK , Australia , India Highly unlikely that any country outside US would invest into developing tiltrotor UAV. If Bell does not succeed...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The above is what the B2s should have been. Unfortunately that's not what got built, and the time has now passed, with Royal Navy making the most out of the OPVs they have. Into the future, MHPC does not exist anymore, the Navy consider part P satisfied with new OPVs, and is moving forward with the...
