Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

History 101 So you can't tell me how so? The RN clearly wanted all 13, and there were rumours of a £11bn price tag, the Treasury said no. Yes but it was the navy who messed up the procurement as such that the price rose to that, out of the RN's budget, so if they did ask the treasury for more then ...

Re: Labour's likely defence policy

Anyone here follow this podcast? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1adaPHQLc5w Listening to the Shadow Defense minister this morning on the news and he had a lot of nothing to say, no commitments to anything sadly. A few takeaway points of Labours plan. Building a strong UK Home defence, whatever tha...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

A GP frigate for at least half the price or more can provide a good level of ASW with a TAS and it doesn't need to be modularised. But would your GP frigate actually catch any submarines? If the chances of that are tiny, it's wasted money. There a lots of frigates and destroyers around the world fi...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

As the cost of type 26 B2's carries on climbing if we want ASW hunter killers then maybe more SSN's would be better The cost isn’t climbing - but yes a few (2-3) more T26s and a few more SSNs would be ideal - however believe it or not the crewing issues are easier to solve above water currently. OK...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Any illusion that build a new “cheaper” (read compromised) class in a multi-national program and it will be a success is just that, an illusion - albeit sadly one that the Treasury will believe. Are you suggesting the Australians have got it completely wrong with their smaller, more numerous ASW ve...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

It’s a fair point, but the last thing we need is another class of ASW frigate I’m not suggesting it’s the best direction of travel but the benefits are clear. • A joint £5bn program with a NATO member to produce 10x next-gen GP Frigates optimised for off-board systems including ASW. • Rosyth is sec...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Even with the substantial hike in defence spending, is the Royal Norwegian Navy realistically going to be able to afford 5 x T26? It seems to me that it might be worth them considering either a 2 + 3 or a 3 + 2 mix with T31. Alternatively, 5 x FREMM or similar. 5 FDI or joining the new danish navy ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

The RM if it goes with the idea of LSU's with 2 strike companies then with 2 coming together the RM could fight at battle group level supported by 28 & 29 Cdo

also with 4 x 100m SLS's operating with a Point class acting as a logistics hub they can move a lot of kit if needed

The decision to delete sea harrier was in 2005 and implemented in 2006 so long gone by sdsr 2010. So that tweet is conflating several things. The real question is should fa2 sea harrier ever been started. They should have gone for the av8b with the blue vixen radar and used it both in the RN and th...
