Re: RBSL Challenger 3 (Future) Main Battle Tank (British Army)
There was a lot of from what we’re hearing ect from the committee in questioning the sec def about it. They were also quite forthright in telling the defence secretary and the VCDS they wanted the program cancelled. Why did they want it cancelled? As for not having enough hulls in a fit state, I fi...

Don't forget that their is wind over deck to be factored in. Even in still air a ship generated 20-25 knot wind over deck will make quite a difference to take off performance.

Re: Apache Attack Helicopter (British Army Air Corps)
The MOD often seem to make bizarre decisions, unfortunately we never hear by whom and why such decisions are made. While I'm sure the decisions made are sometimes justified the unnecessary secrecy, that seems to be the default setting, doesn't help convincing those of us on the outside that some nef...

At first sight yes but it depends what it is working with. If it is in a combined artillery regiment of 1 x HQ Battery 1 x Battery of 105 SP Jackal 1 x Battery of HIMARS 1 x AD Troop 1 x UAV Troop If this is added to a Infantry Battalion that also has Javelin , SP 120mm Mortar & Brimstone Over-...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
People keep referring to type 46 Armoured Regiments. I am not sure where this comes from. As I understand it each Armoured Regiment is made up as follows: RHQ 2 x CR2 3 x Sabre Squadron's each with: SHQ 2x CR2 4 x Troops each with 4 x CR2 This gives us 18 x CR2 per Sqn, and a total of 56 x CR2 per R...

Ha Ha
You got me.
Perhaps I should have said the modern (20th century) interpretation of a mortar.
Anyway when you look at systems such as NEMO the capabilities they are after look more and more like those of a howitzer rather than a mortar.

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
Mortars were developed as a means of providing infantry with organic fire support, they were cheap, simple and effective, particularly against targets behind cover or in dead ground. However modern mortars which are rifled, breech loaded and possibly automatic loading as being discussed above are no...

Leaving aside whether they are periscopes or episcopes, I fundamentally disagree that they are unnecessary. For an AFV commander situational awareness is vital, one aspect of this is having all round visio...

Why does the Ranger Regt want/need a new rifle rather than the SA80?
Why does it need to be an AR15 based rifle?

It wasn't just Bloodhound that needed replacing but Thunderbird too. Money of course was the problem and they could always rely on the RAF to deal with medium/high altitude threats! Today the situation has changed with the widespread use of precision guided munitions putting any fixed installations ...

Re: Dual Tramway STOVL Carrier
Having witnessed Sea Harrier operating from HMS Ark Royal I was impressed by how efficient and quick launch and recovery operations were. I feel that their is little need for a duel tramway as you call it, its as likely to unnecessarily complicate launch procedures and actually slow them down. As fo...

The particular arm that deals with turret control is Swiss. They do have a subsidary in the UK but it deals with other things . Who built the gun control/ stabilisation system for CR2? Think First World War, if you have a new fangled flying machine spying on you, even dropping the odd bomb what do you do? You arm your own flying machines to shoot them down. Which leads to to them arming their flying machines..... Inevitably that's what will happen with drones. The interesting ques...

Ah, I wondered if anyone would come up with that. If you are referring to CAMM, its yet to prove its capability against surface targets. Assuming however that it is successful, one problem would be its cost, but more importantly do you want to use your limited number of anti air missiles against sma...

In the same way that Brimstone would have previously required you to have a Typhoon on hand... Which was rather my point. Wildcat with Sea Venom or LMM is good, giving the capability to engage targets at distance. However it cant be guaranteed to be available when required, a shipborne system gives...
