Re: SSN-AUKUS Future Astute Replacement (2030s) (RN) [News Only]

https://www.defensenews.com/naval/2024/04/15/aukus-sub-design-deemed-mature-as-nations-debate-top-technologies/ Some comments were quite distraught about the comments in this article about the reactor being a US design, potentially sideswiping UK industry, at least for the design. All UK built subs...

Re: Labour's likely defence policy

I have but you clearly don't understand it. The link you posted shows the spending in 'real terms' i.e. inflation is accounted for. It confirms on average NHS spending has increased 3.6% a year after inflation. That's after economic inflation (as basket of goods), that's not the inflation that the ...

Well as an island nation, ignoring the channel tunnel, the Army has to go by sea to deliver any weight.

….poor choices…..we cannot just brush under the carpet, as we will make it again. Even if you don’t want to acknowledge it the T31 program has learned some of those lessons. If the budget isn’t blown now they will be exceptionally good value. The T32 is in danger of design drift without discipline ...

NHS funding isn't in disarray it is higher than it has ever been, and that includes billions added by the Tories. Most cuts in government spending in the 14 years have been LAs, who are responsible for social care and the roads. That's such a false representation. The NHS is under increasing pressu...

The amount of back and forth on the T31 means the following must be done to settle the matter once and for all!! Order 3 more Type 31 for a total of 8, with 4 being the original GP, the 4 being 2 ASW and 2 AAW. Frigates 3 and 4 can be ASW and AAW, the second "batch" of 4 can be the remain...

There are only two yards that can integrate a complex warship - Scotstoun and Rosyth. And part of Rosyth is needed anyway to refit the carriers. We shall see how much of T31 is integrated at Rosyth rather than Devonport. H&W are building a diverse marine engineering business including refit, of...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Will the Norwegians really want to replace 4 (+ scrapped Helge Ingstad) GP frigates with 5 ASW? They, more than many, appreciate the Russian threat but is that enough to so radically change their approach to fleet composition? It's not as if they currently have a mix of frigate types. The cynic in ...

Rome wasn't built in a day it takes time to rebuild capability, Cammells/A&P would love the work if it is at no risk to them, SDA virtually bankrupted them again. A bit of subbing is fine, but the risk goes up the bigger the blocks are. As for Fergusons I wouldn't touch that dumpster fire with ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

You would need to overlook where the linage of commandos come from in 41 formed for the raids on the Norwegian and French coasts. Why start the clock in 1941? The commando raids and the invasion of Norway was all Britain could achieve at the time and Churchill wanted “action this day”. RM needs to ...

Re: Labour's likely defence policy

Because the public accounts are FUBAR….. It’s not that simple. HMG has little fiscal headroom because it is choosing not to reallocate funding to different priority areas. UK GDP is now more than £2.2Trillion. Government spending equates to around 45% of that figure. That’s a lot of money that coul...

We've already lost Westminster of the T23ASW, and Monmouth, Montrose and v likely Argyll of the T23GPs. All before delivery of any T26 or T31. True. But would they be crewed if they hadn't been lost? The 3 x GPs will be covered by T31, all of which are scheduled to be delivered by 2030. If we've al...

The T31s are not Corvettes.
Neither are the Mogamis, but the Navantia Alphas are. The RAN/Aus MOD has some choices to make.

Why don’t we get Babcock to build the Norwegian T26s under license from BAE? That way we definitely will not be wasting more money on more T31s or T32s. Never going to happen, What is more likely, much to your annoyance, is that T31 B2 goes ahead, keeps Babcock busy and could alleviate the shortfal...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

History 101 So you can't tell me how so? The RN clearly wanted all 13, and there were rumours of a £11bn price tag, the Treasury said no. Yes but it was the navy who messed up the procurement as such that the price rose to that, out of the RN's budget, so if they did ask the treasury for more then ...
