Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
yes but they were replaced with 16 Type 23 so in 2004 we had 20 frigates 4 x T-22 B3 and 16 Type 23 this dropped to 17 when the 3 T-23's were sold off In real terms we should have kept 16 frigates we should have replaced the T-22's with 6 new GP frigates and Type 23 with 10 new ASW frigates Origina...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
In 98 did anyone think that the 4 B3 Type 22's would go without replacement after just 20 years service I'd imagine they probably wouldn't have minded at all. Back then we were withdrawing Batch 2 Type 22s with as little as 12 years service life at the time! Then again there was the vision back the...

My vote would be for Gannet or Sea Gannet after our previous, fixed-wing, single prop, ASW and AEW platform! Good choice! As it’s a first for the Royal Navy my vote would be for VAMPIRE in memory of Eric “Winkle” Brown’s first landing of a jet aircraft on a ship when he landed on HMS Ocean on 3rd D...

Maybe also speeding up T83. because, if the MoD wants 12, +12 SSNR Where's the 12 Type 83 figure coming from? I'd be flabbergasted if we get more than six. Unfortunately I'd probably be happily surprised for even that many... The solution is to allow BAE to build the T26’s as fast as possible. They...

For £1.5m, I hope we get Royal Navy written in the correct font.. UKNavy.jpg  RoyalNavy.jpg 8-) I quite like the star though! More importantly, the name. Mojave isn't exactly very British and we renamed Predator B. My vote would be for Gannet or Sea Gannet after our previous, fixed-w...

Re: AW101 Merlin Helicopter (RN)
I believe 6 viable stripped HM1's are still in storage, they could be rebuilt to HM2 spec if needed. From what's been said in the past, they're in such a disassembled state that there's not much advantage over building from new. Particularly if they haven't been in proper storage for the last decad...

We've also been down this road before. It was an expensive and rather wasteful experience.
Additional HM2s would be welcome but we don't have the money.

Requests for Proposals have quoted a potential UK requirement for up to 45 FLA and have sought prices for stated equivalent numbers of C-17, and mixed fleets of C-17 and C-130J. Final numbers will be decided in the light of further operational an...

Most of the rest of this article is similar to our speculation here. However a little more detail: The answers to these questions will likely emerge from a new assessment phase being undertaken by UK stakeholders in the Type 31 programme and the US Navy to determine how the Mk41 could be integrated ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Just speculating: The wording: "we intend to fit it also to our Type 31 frigates" is fairly loose and doesn't give timescale, numbers of tubes or any suggestion that it's budgeted On the other hand, why say anything when the intention for MK.41 to be FFBNW type 31 is already on the record?...

The building, which would bring what BAE describes as a pre-paint outfitting facility, would be built on land currently used as a car park. https://...

Re: Lockheed C-130 Hercules (RAF)
Excellent points Jensy, if we are talking a common transport fleet, then 8 more A400's. The main issue with the C130 as a design, is obviously the physical dimensions of the hold. All the equipment the Army uses has grown in size over the last 25 years and now much simply can't be loaded into a C13...

Re: Lockheed C-130 Hercules (RAF)
My answer would be to buy 8 more A400's to directly replace the airlift lost from the retirement of the J's. I would also buy 12 C27J's, for SF and light transport loads. Using A400 for some tasks is like sticking a transit load of pallets onto an Articulated lorry, it's overkill. The C27 has some ...
