Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Will Saudi Arabia take this weeks show to announce a typhoon order ,that's the question?
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Here's an interesting take on it
https://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/ev ... hoon-order
"But industry and UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) insiders reported that the German block had been just one factor in halting the planned deal, and that the RSAF was ‘holding out’ for a Typhoon with the cutting edge ECRS.Mk 2 AESA radar and a large area display (LAD) in the cockpit.
Negotiators reportedly insisted on having the same configuration as RAF Typhoons, to ensure that the RSAF was not left operating an ‘orphan’ variant. It was thus the slow progress with the ECRS.Mk 2, as well as the German block on Typhoon exports, that was responsible for the stalemate."

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Would UK supply the same radar to KSA as for the RAF? Is a wide screen available?

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
A wide screen was made available for the Finnish proposal, so i dont see why it would not become available for Saudia Arabia. Same for the radar.
"Also linked to the proposal, Helsinki was last November offered involvement in the Leonardo UK-led ECRS 2 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar programme in the event of a Typhoon selection. The UK Ministry of Defence last September placed an initial £317 million ($437 million) contract to complete development work, perform testing and produce the updated sensor for part of the RAF’s fleet."

"In response to increased Iranian threats and the growing risk of escalation in the Middle East, the UK Government has been working with partners across the region to encourage de-escalation and prevent further attacks.
We have moved several additional Royal Air Force jets and air refuelling tankers to the region. These will bolster Operation Shader, which is the UK’s existing counter-Daesh operation in Iraq and Syria. In addition, these UK jets will intercept any airborne attacks within range of our existing missions, as required.
We will continue to cooperate closely with our regional partners in the interest of de-escalation."

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
4 voyagers where there, and say each can support up to 4 eurofighters then that is 12 on-top of the 4 already there.
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
I thought it had been more than 4 for a while, closer to 12?

Typhoon actively engaged a number of drones as part of coalition efforts.

Round 2 Vs the Rafale in India.
https://idrw.org/airbus-to-enter-indias ... rofighter/
Seems like a smart idea to use the same plane but this is a land based system and not a carrier based one.
The biggest thing going for the Typhoon is the production backlog for the Rafale. It seems Airbus is doing much of the promotion as usual.

The Indian system of duplicating assets to do the same job is absolutely Bananas, one hell of a way to run an Airforce....Markam wrote: ↑16 Apr 2024, 16:40 Round 2 Vs the Rafale in India.

The good thing is that the world is turning away from Russian equipment as it's been shown to be rather crap!
The Indians need aircraft that can take on the Chinese, if they have any sense, they will ease their logistical nightmare and just order as second batch of Rafal.
As much as I would like Thypoon to make another export deal ......
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Back in the olden days of MRCA, I seem to remember the Indians were quoted at the time as being "highly surprised" that it wasn't the UK/BAE Systems (with all the connections that go with that) leading the Eurofighter bid but EADS. So I see naturally Airbus is leading the bid again...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
If it's Airbus (ie Germany) leading, it's a lost cause. Hopefully these mistakes are never to be repeated
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
lets hope the purchase some this time & maybe some kits for home grown assembly ( although without the demands with the Rafael bid last time ! ) so we can get on & invest in project Tempest
Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
It'll be an interesting one. Airbus DE have no export success with Eurofighter. But then again Rafale has a long waiting list and Dassault don't really do local assembly.
Personally I think it will come down to money, EF is still more expensive, there will need to be a major discount from list price, which would need to be supported by all the EF partners. Are BAE and Italy going to play ball with a soon-to-be competitor?

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Do you mean in the form of Tempest? There's a multi generational gap between the fighters so I'm not sure they're competitors, especially considering the time difference.SD67 wrote: ↑17 Apr 2024, 09:30 It'll be an interesting one. The French seem to be so much better at military exports, we really need to find their secret sauce if we are to compete. Making the better machine is not good enough in military procurement.
If it's a price issue, is it not possible to offer a small-medium-large proposal, with less of the newer kit to reduce the price?

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)
Unfortunately the Typhoon agreement included dedicated sales areas for each of the consortium members.
UK naturally got Saudi and Oman and most of the Gulf hence the sales to RSAF, Oman and Qatar.
Italy got Kuwait, and most of North Africa which might seem odd in the UK but Italy has exported a lot of gear there over the years, plus the Spanish have tensions with some of the countries there.
Spain got South America and Central America....no sales there whatsoever...
Germany got parts of central Europe...hence the failed bit in Switzerland which partly failed due to German incompetence...India was weirdly under them as well, despite BAE selling Hawk to India (relations between Italy and India have been tense for years over a number of Italian's jailed there).
Basically the UK has clearly led on export sales, with Spain and Germany failing dismally, Italy also wasn't doing well until they landed the Kuwaiti order, and an Egyptian order has been on the cards for ages now...
Germany have also managed to mess the UK's sales to Saudi up...
The big question at the moment is can BAE salvage Typhoon with some late overseas sales (the long delayed Saudi order for 48-72), additional Qatari option and, potentially, Poland and Turkey. With the Germans and Spanish partially making up for their incompetence with their own internal orders (Quadriga, EK and a potential larger order for up to 50 Typhoon LTE, Halcon I, II and perhaps a partial III) and getting more operators onboard with secondhand sales of Typhoon Tranche 1 (an option not open to the UK regretably). It seems odd but rather late in the day Typhoon might become the success it always should have been....almost in spite of some of the consortium....
