That would be a massive over correction. There does need to be more focus on sub hunting, which should probably be addressed by expanding the pitiful P8 fleet. Beyond that there is no need for a major course correction, and the Navy needs to be able to sustain its carrier groups at very long range.mrclark303 wrote: ↑05 Jun 2023, 17:38 so it will be wind back the clock to North Atlantic Cold War type ops for the RN, with the carriers spending much of their time in Atlantic waters ...

It depends how bad things go with Ivan, if they continue to degenerate, no signs of improving relations for the foreseeable future, so at least 10 years, then it's the Atlantic, the RN is so small now, it can one or the other, not both....shark bait wrote: ↑09 Jun 2023, 10:27That would be a massive over correction. Talk of regular east of Suez carrier group deployments are pie in the sky now, overtaken by real world events in Europe.
So much more NATO centric....

What are expecting the Royal Navy to be doing exactly? It’s all going to be primarily below the surface and man marking poorly disguised trawlers / research ships gathering intelligence and threatening undersea comms. Doesn’t mean we should be over confident but it isn’t the USSR and we shouldn’t overdo it.mrclark303 wrote: ↑09 Jun 2023, 19:30 It depends how bad things go with Ivan, if they continue to degenerate, no signs of improving relations for the foreseeable future, so at least 10 years, then it's the Atlantic, the RN is so small now, it can one or the other, not both....

As I know it’s some people’s favourite topic, but I’ve read that there are 50 Russian intelligence gathering trawlers / research ships operating in NATO waters currently, feels like we need a few more OPVs (or Battleships) depending on our budget.

OPVs with some EW equipment might be sufficient to keep annoying the Ivans

It’s a fair question.
How many OPV’s are now required in the UK EEZ?
For the next 10-15 years it could be 5 or more.
The argument that more GP Frigates are required for Patrolling the UK EEZ is less convincing.
Increasing P8 numbers would probably be the most effective short to medium term improvement the MoD could make in the upcoming Defence Command Paper.
Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
Maybe the OPV could be disguised as OSVs as to not draw too much suspicion.

An OPV and OSV mix may be optimal but OSVs alone are just too slow for general maritime security.
