Likely the wake detection trailed on a T-boat a couple of years ago.
Am I being thick? But that is a T boat in the photo? Has this been seen on an Astute?
Seem to remember some of the sensors were on the sail last time though.

I think these have been seen before on a T boat, but on the sail, not sure which T boat was seen with them (it was a few years ago). loks like a new iteration of the previous system.

What's that?
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

T-boats are the Trafalgar class SSN's. Their names all begin with T.

It's a fair question after a mistaken identity of the sub briefly (which is understandable). So long as things don't spiral, I see no reason to relocate the posts.

I know what are Trafalgar class boats. I'm asking what's "WAKE DETECTION"?

Once you detect it (from afar), then you can fire wake-homing torpedoes into it
- ooops; we don't have any such

The Russians did (maybe still do) try sniffing for radiation to try and detect subs. However detecting meaningful tradition form the background sounds like an almost impossibly difficult task.

Wake detection uses radar or lidar like techniques to detect differences in water density, possibly caused by a submarine heating and mixing the water. Again very difficult to detect, and I imagine must generate lots of false positives. I guess these days they can apply some machine learning to filter out the false positives, which is maybe why the RN are interested.

Watching part two of the documentary it states that they intend to keep the 971 Akula class in service of up to another 30 years. If it is t be believed they will have been in service for over 50 years when they retire! Sort of puts our retirement of the T-Class in to perspective.

Babcock Secures Tomahawk LACM Contract for UK MoD

Babcock International, the Aerospace and Defence company, has secured a 3.5 year Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) contract. Working in collaboration with Lockheed Martin UK – Integrated Solutions, this programme will deliver in-service support for Tactical Tomahawk Weapons Control systems (TTWCS) and associated auxiliaries for the UK Ministry of Defence (Defence Equipment & Support).

Roll on the Astute batch II's!!! When those that are supposed to be responsible, start acting responsibly and order another (much needed) batch and also provide the people to operate and maintain them.

Cut the manning, reduce the number ordered & delay the programme, all to "Save" money. The production facilities then atrophy and the ability to produce a strategic necessity is lost. Result becomes slow production in insufficient numbers and at much higher cost. Politicians answer is to cut numbers yet again??? Most, if not all of the fault is theirs all the way through.

I may not be around to see it, but an SSN fleet of around 12 boats cannot arrive soon enough.

The remaining four boats (AUDACIOUS, ANSON, AGAMEMNON and AGINCOURT) are at varying stages of completion, with final delivery expected by November 2026. The Astute programme is being procured through single source contracts and are being built at the lead suppliers’ shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.
An Astute Whole Programme Approval was secured in March 2018, which allowed for an Operational Handover date for AUDACIOUS of August 2019. This Accounting Officer Assessment is necessary because this date has been breached, following emergent technical issues within the build programme. The emergent issues have required unplanned repair and rework to facilitate the submarine proceeding forward with the normal commissioning process. The Operational handover for AUDACIOUS is now planned for January 2021.

The delays to the build have not currently caused the programme to overrun in cost terms given that the financial approval is at the programme level (rather than by individual boat) and includes contingency. However, there has been a knock-on schedule delay to ANSON and further schedule challenges with the remaining build. Consequently, the level of schedule risk provision is being reviewed and, longer term, it may be necessary to seek to increase this.

I really wish we could build an eighth Astute, delaying the build of one of the Dreadnoughts as a result. It has been pointed out in the defence press that eight is the real minimum number of SSNs we need to meet our commitments and retain some flexibility in deployments. Funding permitting I would also like to see at least half of the class have a similar hull insert to what the USNs Virginia class are having, greatly increasing their offensive capability and capacity.

Wrt the above, where would we (or the Dreadnoughts) be now, without the hall capacity having been expanded to three boats?
- looks like the dove tailing of the build (run) of the two classes might turn out to be more than planned, which decreases concurrency between identical builds... which increases costs
- at least they can do this reshuffling (and the utilisation of specialised trades) without having to worry about the production of reactor cores (as all boats are receiving the same kind)

The govt should get another builder (from UK or global industry) to set up an SSK production line on a seperate site @ or near Barrow.

In the future this would let the yards compete for contracts of SSK's, SSN's or SSBN's while using the same local talent pools + specialist trades.

Would arrest the price increases and the lack of latter unit efficiency savings.
