I too thought it might be HMS Liverpool then I remembered that Liverpool is the affiliated city of HMS Prince of Wales carrier, so not so sure on that now. Perhaps HMS Manchester?Gabriele wrote:HMS Liverpool for me.
Liverpool's role in the Battle of the Atlantic was huge, even though the cruiser with the same name didn't have a service life long enough to gain an Atlantic battle honor.

Just a little bias but HMS Edinburgh would be lovely to see back.

I think it will be Edinburgh but if not I would like to see Exeter
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Nov. 21 Re. the Alion Science and Technology Corp. and its subsidiary, Alion Canada bid for the CSC which lost out (design Dutch-designed De Zeven Provinciën Air Defence and Command (LCF) frigate) is asking the court to set aside an Oct. 19 decision to select Lockheed Martin Canada with design based on the Type 26 as the winning bid as 'incapable of meeting three critical mandatory requirements' of the design tender. Notably, they say the Type 26 cannot meet the mandatory speed requirements.
The court application also points out that the design tender was amended 88 times during the 22 months it was under consideration and that the changes "effectively diluted the [warship] requirements" and allowed the government and Irving to select "an unproven design platform."
The claim that the T26 cannot meet the speed requirement, presuming max 30 knots, may be true, Type 26 - 8,000t FLD 149.9m x 20.8m, with its single MT30GT 36MW quoted at 26+ knots and the Hunter 27+ knots versus the De Zeven Provinciën - 6,050t FLD 144.2m x 18.8m, with its SpeyGTs, 2 x 18.5 = 37 MW quoted at 30 knots, so De Zeven Provinciën the lighter ship by 2,000t and a fraction more power.
Note
"Design tender was amended 88 times during the 22 months" amendments point to either normal updates, reflecting the years tender in preparation as incompetence by contracting authority or as Alion is inferring skewing the contract to one supplier.
Moot point if max speed difference between 27 and 30 knots that important
BAE were pushing T26 for the USN FFG(X), were disqualified on first round as parent ship not operational, to meet the speed spec, of 28 knots at 80% MCR would need total re-design of the propulsion system for extra power, 2 x GE LM2500GTs?, high max speed is very expensive.

Aren't we already getting a Manchester? For me one of them has got to be Exeter after the 8" gun Cruiser of WW2. Performed brilliantly at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939 where her 8" guns proved crucial then very sadly lost in 1942 at the Battle of the Java Sea.
Most of the crew got off and were rescued by Japanese Destroyers, most by the Ikazuchi under the command of Lt Comd Shunsaku Kudo who placed his own vessel at great risk to pick up some 442 survivors, mainly Exeter's men. Sadly most then went on to suffer terribly as PoW's, and many never made it home.
Incidentally I watched the film, Battle of the River Plate, last Sunday. A great film and one of the earliest produced in colour. Although clearly the acting style is now a bit dated there's some brilliant footage of RN big gun Cruisers in action, with HMNZS Achilles staring as herself.

Just answered my own question POW (along with Liverpool).
However HMS QE is twinned with City of London

99.9% certain that #7 will be named after Edinburgh, as its currently the only national capital city in the UK without a T26 named after it.

I suspect it’s most likely to be Edinburgh. A new HMS Exeter would be nice, but I suspect it’ll have to wait like Liverpool and York for the yet to be announced improved Type 26 Batch 2 order
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
BAE Systems Australia has officially selected Saab (including Lockheed Martin with its Aegis CMS) to deliver the combat system integration for the Type 26 Hunter class frigates (Australian Government Oct. 2017, mandated Saab’s 9LV CMS across the RAN fleet).
The Saab 9LV CMS is an open-architecture design which allows seamless integration of third party systems, sensors and weapons, my understanding is Saab CMS software flexibility based on a similar approach to Androd/iPhone’s OS architecture, which breaks the software into two categories: anything that is flight critical in the basic software, while anything to do with tactical aspects, weapons, sensors, tactics, data fusion, comms – into a series of specialised programmes that interface with, but are independent of the basic software.
This means like the Apps in an Android/iPhone, specialised programmes can be easily and simply added and deleted without interfering with any flight critical functions. With aircraft not uncommon for a cost of £100M plus and over a year for integration a new weapon system, software cost a large element.
Israel Aerospace Industries adopted a similar approach to allow Israeli made sensors and weapons to its F-35Is without having access to the software source codes which US refused access to, at one time UK threatened to pull out of the F-35 programme for this very reason. Israel used generic communications infrastructure based on the latest Software Defined Radios (SDR), the C4 system developed for the F-35I Adir “enables rapid software and hardware development cycles that will also provide more affordable modernization and support of systems in future", IAI said in a press release.
More than 200 warships use the Saab 9LV CMS.

So the 7th is now safe, because the Scots would be up in arms if cancellation were to be threatened.CameronPerson wrote:

So Scotland get 2
Yorkshire gets 1
Lancashire get 0
All three have approx (using Cricket county boundary's) the population!

What happens if Sturgeon gets her way and Scotland becomes independent. Will the RN be happy with having ships named after a foreign country, particularly under the circumstances.

There's no chance of Sturgeon's tantrum reaping what she wants...

24 November 2018:
1. HMS Glasgow
2. HMS Cardiff
3. HMS Belfast
4. HMS Birmingham
5. HMS Sheffield
6. HMS Newcastle
7. HMS Edinburgh
8. HMS London
Now to guess pennant numbers? Sadly, F260 to F264 are currently used by German K130 Braunschweig class corvettes.

Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Just order two more and call them Liverpool and Exeter and we’ll be done

Will the 7th and 8th be cancelled because the T26 class will not be regarded as CAPITAL SHIPS?
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Rohde and Schwarz in 2015 won the contract for the integrated communications systems for the T26 with their R&S NAVICS IP-based switching system and their external VHF/UHF and HF transceivers, M3SR Series 4400 and 4100 radios, the unique RF filter technology will be combined with the their distinctive antenna and mast designs of the T26.
R & S has sub-contracted to STS Defence Gosport the build, fabrication and outfit the 6 integrated communications masts, 2 per ship in five year programme. The masts will support a range of antennas providing line of sight communications across a range of frequency bands, special isolation screens, manufactured from composite materials by Jeremy Roberts Ltd. Lymington, to provide isolation between the different frequency bands. STS last month sub-contracted the mast manufacture structure and assembly to Mainstay Marine Solutions, Pembroke.
