And, apparently, the Germans...

Just saw this pop up on twitter.
Good news if they go for it, but don't the Germans have their own production line still active?

Each country is responsible for supplying parts for every aircraft, for example BAE supply the canards for every Typhoon (and loads more).

There are 4 final assembly lines, one for each of the partner countries, that will handle its own aircraft, and any export sales that country secures.

Any additional order is good for UK industry, and keeping the Typhoon supply chain healthy.

I think all assembly plants are still open, but the Germans and Spanish must be close to finished by now, Spain are building one every three months to try and stretch things out! UK and Italian plants are pretty healthy for the next 5 years with both internal and external orders to fulfill.

At some point they will have to consolidate down to a single assembly plant to keep production open for as long as possible.

such an idiotic waste to have 4 individual assembly lines.

One wonders why Germany and Spain even waste the money on them, given they don't get export deals at all. Italy and (mostly) the UK have carried this project on their backs.

So, UK is/was prepared to leave assembly of British Typhoons to, say, Italy or Germany?
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Defence Minister reveals new RAF Squadron at Qatar event
Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin expanded on that agreement at a State of Qatar National Day reception in London today. She revealed that a new UK-based Typhoon joint squadron will be called No. 12 squadron, and that it will temporarily integrate Qatari personnel, including pilots and ground-crew based at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire.

The Qataris will not be a permanent part of the squadron, but will be integrated ahead of the delivery of the Typhoon aircraft. The move will provide the country with valuable joint frontline experience on an RAF Typhoon Squadron and speed up their preparation for when their own jets are delivered.

Nope. There was more than one option on the table.

Is this 'new squadron' a really new squadron? or is it one of the interim squadrons we we're already expecting?

It will live on as the first of the additional squadrons promised by the SDSR. Another will form in Lossiemouth, identity yet to be announced. There was talk of a third, but i don't know how much i believe to that.
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

Of there is a third does that infer yet another slow down in the standing up of the F35b squadrons, or possibly even fewer F35b squadrons overall?

I doubt it is related, the qataris are paying for this then they'll want what they've paid for.

I doubt the eighth sqn will happen but Qatar have been splashing the cash recently, so who knows.

https://www.defensenews.com/air/2018/01 ... rain-deal/

Bahrain chooses F16 block 70 (16 airframes), over Typhoon, in a $2.3 billion dollar deal.

Interestingly: "A Eurofighter spokesperson noted that, based on current orders, the typhoon will continue to be delivered until 2024" which presumably means that the recent Qatar order will keep the UK production line running until about 2023???

Waited far too long on Bahrain. Missed the chance when it was sitting right there years ago.

Anyone that chooses F16's over Typhoons were never really in a financial position to buy them anyway...
