According to a tweet or maybe a facebook post apparently Ocean will have one last bit of action soon with some Apache embarking for training.
I would have preferred seeing them embark on QE, considering which ship is staying and which is going... but if accurate it means Ocean is not quite gone yet.

QE got a little mention in this opinion piece in The Guardian, not a great one though. The article itskef is a little bizarre tbh, it seems to be addressed to the MoD and tries to advise it on spending the defence budget properly.. oddly the source for this author comes almost entirely from “insiders” within the Russian Military. The author seems to be a little bit naive in thinking that the Russians are being nice and dispensing some friendly advice to help us out
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... iew-russia

The article has been pulled apart by Sir Humphrey on his Thin Pin Striped Line blog, he speaks more logically about QE. Here’s the link to the response should anyone be interested

Ok, now that other folks have picked it up (it is bizarre!), I put my commentary [that I challenged dmreifeld to find] on it on TD

The Guardian and Russia are almost the same thing.

Does anyone know why QE has a CIWS and 30mm on three corners, but only a 30mm on the rear right side? From looking at the placement, it seems like a pretty big hole in its 360 coverage. Alot of the starboard stern side looks uncovered.

Sorry for the crappy image, just trying to visualize the arcs. Red is CIWS, Green is 30mm. I most likely gave several of the emplacements more arc than they should. But even with the arcs I marked, it seems like there are several openings in the coverage.

Warships would never stay on a steady course during an air attack. They move continuously. All arcs would be covered.

CGIs showed the standard tubes for launch of decoy rounds, plus Sea Sentor anti-torpedo defences.

Its disappointing that they will have no organic EW Suite fitted and have to rely on their escorts, aircraft or link.

That's really surprising to hear... :lolno:
I'm not sure, but the only light- ish on the horizon is Spear III, but that has a small warhead. It could conduct a saturation attack to make up for the small warhead. But then Sea Eagle could do that too..

This may be going slightly off topic for this thread, but just as a thought - if we were to pick LRASM as a Harpoon replacement, we could also procure them for air platforms and then have commonality between ship and air based AShMs, much like the USN currently do with Harpoon.

Similar argument for JSM/NSM (canister launched JSM would be nice), except it's avialble now and will be integrated on F-35 and P-8.

The real LRASM isn't due until after 2025, and although I think it won't happen, thats getting awfully close to Perseus' timeframe. NSM and JSM are ready now and fill the gap more effectively. Not as good at land attack though and they are smaller.

Re: the possible Gibraltar visit for QE. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish do the dicking about that we've seen with SSN's.
