Australian Defence Force
Re: Australian Defence Force
Defense News Redback for Australia write up in Jan '21
"The Redback is also designed with ride comfort in mind, with rubber tracks and independent suspension in lieu of more common metal running gear and torsion bar suspension. Hanwha added that noise reduction measures has also meant it is possible to conduct conversations in the troop compartment, even when the vehicle is moving."
Makes you think of the noisy Ajax.

Lotta beat-up old Blackhawks sitting around the US somewhere that could be leased for a year or two. And they only left service here a couple of years ago.R686 wrote: ↑31 Jul 2023, 06:29 https://www.theaustralian.com.au/subscr ... our=append

First of the new Blackhawks are set for Q4 this year, so might not be worth the effort.Mercator wrote: ↑31 Jul 2023, 07:47Lotta beat-up old Blackhawks sitting around the US somewhere that could be leased for a year or two. But is a option I guess.
Re: Australian Defence Force
We already have 24 with another 12 on order. prior to the Blackhawk buy
We have enough for a ASW carrier would really like to see a Japanese Izumo-class with both MH-60R/F35B with the Hyuga ASW fit out in RAN colours.

Re: Australian Defence Force
I think people are forgetting how horrible being in an AFV used to be...
Re: Australian Defence Force
Maybe fitting the canberra class with a F35B heat landing spot could be done as a crossdeck lillypad with the USMC etc F35b or QEC as a part of AUKUS deal as a first step towards operating you own fixed wing aircraft again... Invnicibles started with just 5 sea harriers for a while ....
Re: Australian Defence Force
They have already sailed in a task group with a compliment of helicopters I think the longest was a 6 month deploymentserge750 wrote: ↑31 Jul 2023, 16:35Maybe fitting the canberra class with a F35B heat landing spot could be done as a crossdeck lillypad with the USMC etc F35b or QEC as a part of AUKUS deal as a first step towards operating you own fixed wing aircraft again... My thinking was it a hot environment aUS carrier task group would want a ASW screen that could keep up with the task group and prose a pretty big screen around the task group with the Izumi class have a top speed in excess of 30knots unlike a Canberra class of around 20 knots
Izumho would have the large hull mounted sonar plus it’s own VLS system
Never going to happen but something the RAN needs

Re: Australian Defence Force
Don't know if this delivery timetable was always planned or whether some deal was engineered, but here they are:
Re: Australian Defence Force
I wonder how fast they are being built?
Expensive way to ship them over would have thought they would have sent them over a LHD and bring them back in one lot
But it is good that they are arriving and the advice sound a saving in the long run otherwise I doubt the ALP would have done it
Re: Australian Defence Force
I'd expect the first few to arrive this way to allow for integration, testing, acceptance trials, etc.
The rest would probably be shipped.
Re: Australian Defence Force
"I wouldn't want to raise expectations around having the Black Hawks in service sooner, we are in the process of transitioning to Black Hawks pretty well as of now," the defence minister told reporters last week.
"But it is both a question of having the airframes come to Australia, but also a question of making sure that all the appropriate training and credentialling is done for those who operate the Black Hawks, so that that can be done in a safe way."
Last week's arrival of the initial two Black Hawks has surprised industry figures who believe the delivery appears to be "well ahead of schedule" for a $10 billion purchase which was only finalised this year.
I think the US probably just gave up a few delivery slots for us. Something like that."But it is both a question of having the airframes come to Australia, but also a question of making sure that all the appropriate training and credentialling is done for those who operate the Black Hawks, so that that can be done in a safe way."

Agree, from memory the US put in its last orders in for aprox. 120 odd aircraft late 2022Mercator wrote: ↑07 Aug 2023, 00:03

They also from memory will be supported until the late 2040’s

Re: Australian Defence Force
If the RAN wanted to go that way, the Constellation class might be a better fit. The USN will have already completed the integration of AEGIS, ESSM, SM-2, Nulka etc.

Re: Australian Defence Force
yes, but then we are just straight up replacing the T-26. None of this corvette nonsense – just a better frigate. Hobart class, ver 2.0 becomes an option too. Quicker if we let the Spaniards do a couple. Of course, then they'd want to replace AEGIS with CEAFAR on either one of them and we go around again.
Ultimately though, that's how I'd square the circle. Let the OPVs be OPVs. Do the strap on SAM & SSMs if it makes you feel better, but otherwise don't mess with existing plans too much. Leave the T26 at a reasonable number but save money when you can – say six vessels. Improvements in the second batch as you can make them. and just undertake a parallel build of more Hobarts with CEAFAR or the newer AEGIS after a proper assessment of the displacement issues. If need be, do blocks or whole vessels in Spain. We know they can do that and it keeps costs relatively modest while still engaging all available Australian shipbuilding. (I think if we were being honest with ourselves, we could only do parts of a second frigate/corvette line). And the training burden is no higher than what we currently have at sea.

But given the job of a RAN GP Frigate the extra 3000 nmi range and 4 Knot extra speed of AH-140 must count for somethingSouthernOne wrote: ↑13 Aug 2023, 05:49If the RAN wanted to go that way, the Constellation class might be a better fit. Re: Australian Defence Force
What the RAN want and what the RNZN need are someway apart maybe the better option would be that the RNZN went for a Type 31 and then joined the RAN in buying and maintaining weapon stocks
Re: Australian Defence Force
+ half the price, which is what maintains the right to convert from corvettes to this.Tempest414 wrote: ↑14 Aug 2023, 08:25But given the job of a RAN GP Frigate the extra 3000 nmi range and 4 Knot extra speed of AH-140 must count for somethingSouthernOne wrote: ↑13 Aug 2023, 05:49If the RAN wanted to go that way, the Constellation class might be a better fit. Be a great delayed victory for Denmark if a few other countries chose their design and why not

Re: Australian Defence Force
You only need to look at the respective NZ and Aus upgrades to their ANZAC class frigates to see how divergent their expectations are.Tempest414 wrote: ↑14 Aug 2023, 08:56What the RAN want and what the RNZN need are someway apart maybe the better option would be that the RNZN went for a Type 31 and then joined the RAN in buying and maintaining weapon stocks
