Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
So the T-45s radars are considered good enough that they only need the obsolete parts replacing to keep them serviceable. Well that is par for the course with UK defence planning, spending just enough to keep things moving, but pushing actual capability upgrade down the road repeatedly as there are simply not enough slices firm the cake available.
Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
This ‘it’ll do’ attitude really isn’t good for keeping an up to date and modern force. Particularly with such low ship numbers, you’d think we’d want to maximise the capabilities of the ones we do have to the best of our abilities. There are upgrades available (in service with other nations already in some instances), we should be pushing for them.Lord Jim wrote:So the T-45s radars are considered good enough that they only need the obsolete parts replacing to keep them serviceable. Sampson does seem to be receiving some continued development in Formidable Shield exercises.
Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Sampson is the main radar. It's a software driven radar and has received a steady stream of software updates. In fact the T45's are fitted with a dedicated antenna just for this task.
So save the rants for something more worthy.

I enjoy ranting it keeps me warm and the Forum interesting.
Mind you the Mod has as one of its core principals, the mission to always try to shave a little bit of funding here and some more over there, on an annual cycle, often regardless of how it affects things long term. I know this from personal experience. Cutting a repair programme, halting the procurement of spares overnight, reducing the level of tooling and Ground Support Equipment available at units and so on. Modern systems that are software driven systems do make things easier there is no doubt, but they are still the exception not the rule. Most systems still rely on Line Replaceable Units, or whatever they are called and so there is still a repair an overhaul chain that can be screwed up by in year decisions and what can take over a years to sort out once the decision is reversed.
Sorry ranting again!

Confirmed that T45 Dragon in her 2021 shoot of Aster30, did just killed a subsonic target, not super sonic...
Her "near cousin" has been done it, more than once. RN shall better follow it, I think.

Here it is on youtube,
I dont remember other Sea Viper launches being as energetic

The speed at which that missile launches is absolutely astounding.

I thought they had speeded up the film but having checked against the rotation of the navigation radar it seems it was real time. Energetic indeed!Jdam wrote:I dont remember other Sea Viper launches being as energetic

Why will it not depend on the program of tests for the whole exercise and not what one class of ship or other fire at whatdonald_of_tokyo wrote:Confirmed that T45 Dragon in her 2021 shoot of Aster30, did just killed a subsonic target, not super sonic...

Also am I missing something we know that Aster 15/30 can take down a supersonic ASM as seen by the French test and we also know from the report above that T-45 can track such missiles with so much time in the bag it can hand over target info to another ship to take down the missile so why do people think it can't guide its own Aster's to the target

No objection. It is a logical thinking.Tempest414 wrote:Why will it not depend on the program of tests for the whole exercise and not what one class of ship or other fire at what.

But, it also means RN is NOT paying for the super-sonic test. Not contributing to the program in that respect. Also, no matter how logical it is, it is always better to actually try it. I thought RN was in this side. Try, verify and improve. Now, RN is waiting for others to try, waiting for others' input, and waiting for improvements proposed from others'. Not a good attitude as one of the leading Navies in NATO.
This is what I meant.

More Aster 30 porn from Formidable Shield 2021 though this time fired from the Italian FREMM frigate F597 Antonio Marceglia
Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Aster will climb to a higher altitude after launch if the target is at a longer range to fly through thinner air for as much of the flight path as is possible (increasing range and conserving momentum). Which is what we see in a few YouTube videos of missile firings. Obviously for a closer, lower flying target it does not have the luxury and must change course quite aggressively out of the cell.Jdam wrote:I dont remember other Sea Viper launches being as energetic
There are some great videos of SeaWolf also doing this, showing launch to intercept in one shot.

A [Russian] patrol ship fired twice and the Su24-M jet dropped four bombs in [HMS Defender's] path, the Russian reports say.

That's some top trolling of their Russian counterparts by the MoD right there.Fire_In_My_Hole wrote:

This incident was reported as such in Ukraine media as such but stated this happened in Ukrainian waters
https://www.kyivpost.com/ukraine-politi ... enies.html
There is of course interest by Ukraine to join N.A.T.O sooner rather than later and also the U.K

Perhaps it's a coincidence that the same ship mentioned in the above article was also sailing in those Ukrainian waters that Russia wishes to claim

Frankly its good to see the RN being bold again.
Must have come from high up the chain to keep going when they said "alter course or we fire".
And they clearly had planned it all which is why a journo and film crew happened to be aboard
