Stupid effing question. I think he meant what's the cheapest rate to build them. But that would only attract a smart ass answer just like the one he did get.

For years the relative drum beat, between the classes once they both get going after the first in class, has been indicated as 1 for every 1.5
- now that could (seem to) 1 for every two

Is that a real change? Must flip the coin for the answer

Speaking about the Type 26 frigate and its large flexible mission bay capable of holding up to 14 shipping containers of equipment, he said that: “we have had the confidence to wait and see how we best use that space”. There are many options, which could include; “Directed-energy weapons, a railgun, mobile 3D printing factories, it might be ‘MCM in a box’, it could be a full office suite for an embassy, it could be medical facilities or a suite of surface or underwater drones to enhance a single ship’s reach. That is what the RN of the future is starting to look like”.
A railgun?! wasn’t expecting that in a T26 mission bay!

A few thoughts

The USN Electro-Magnetic Rail Gun (EMRG) appears to have gone the way of the dodo
"The Navy’s FY2021 budget submission requests $9.5 million in FY2021 for continued development of EMRG, but does not appear to program any additional development funding for EMRG in FY2022-FY2025"

DEW, lasers, large funding for development in US but still open question if viable weapon system will result, will need to install the underdeck necessary laser hardware for delivering high pulsed energy and power which expect require substantial volume, so reducing the size of the mission bay permantly.

Mobile 3D printing factory, purpose making a few spares?

MCM, why not use a more accomplished/effective dedicated minehunter eg as the new Belgium/Dutch ships

The less said the better on use of a premier RN WARSHIP as an office suite for an embassy or medical facilities, in current climate buy a much more capable cruise ship for those missions, going cheap at the moment :)

Lastly use of mission bay as magazine for underwater drones etc makes sense eg heavy weight torpedo's, downside as don't think mission bay armoured, if hit by ASCM could result in big explosion.

The original T26 driver of the large mission bay was for amphib operations, RHIB's, troops and stores, as was the large landing deck sized for the Chinook.

Sometimes you might be conducting ops where there's a risk of mines and the minehunter can't get there or operate there for whatever reason. Sure you can forward position some of them but that doesn't provide absolute global coverage, nor do I imagine a MCM vessel is able keep up with a CVBG trying to transit at speed, at least not for very long.

Like down south when they needed to ascertain if Falkland Sound was mined or not and all they could do is run HMS Alacrity back and forth and see if she hit one.

IMO a RoRo MCM payload could be quite valuable on on T26.

Why aren't these ships called the "Glasgow Class" ? A previous "City Class" of Type 42 destroyers all had British city names, yet they were all known collectively as the "Sheffield Class" after the first in class.

Not City-class but Canadian T26.

Impressive CG image.
- Looks spacy and not so much top heavy.
- ExLS can be spotted next to the funnel. Compact it is. We can imagine how it can be installed on RN City class.
- 24-cell Mk.41 VLS (for SM2 (6?) and ESSM) and 6-cell ExLS (for 24 CAMM).
- Looks like carrying 8 NSM.

- Boat alcove shutter/door between the mission-bay door and flight deck looks very small?
- AS torpedo tube door is shown between the Boat alcove shutter/door(?) and the flight deck.

Reduced from original 32? As the SSM is NSM (not Harpoon), the CG might be not so old.

If so, RN T26 City class is even better armed than Canadian CSC? (while Canadian radar suits SPY7 AESA are much better than in RN T26, ARTISAN).

No, that's an old image. The RCN published the "official" specs a few months ago, and there are 32 Mk 41 VLS cells, all strike length.

Assuming the lower flat panel array on CSC deck house is the MDA Solid State AESA Target Illuminator (the larger array SPY-7 AESA S-band radar), thoughts why target illuminator fitted as guessing CSC AA missiles all come with active homing heads, Sea Ceptor, ESSM Blk 2 and SM-2 IIIC ?

Ultra awarded contract Feburay 3 to commence work on an all Canadian Towed Low Frequency Active Sonar (TLFAS) variable depth sonar (VDS) for the CSC programme. TLFAS is optimised for detection and tracking of stealthy submarines in challenging ocean environments "a step-change in Canada’s anti-submarine warfare assets and will provide a level of sonar capability never before enjoyed by the Royal Canadian Navy." The Ultra LFAS sold to Royal Netherlands Navy using Dutch software, RNN were very complimentary following trials.

Possible answers
1) they want to use up stocks of older ESSM and SM2
2) ESSM and SM2 need illumination until nearer the target ie no data link like Sea Ceptor
3) used as generic x band radar for gun laying and close in target acquisition
4) make work exercise for MDA

Thx, a few thoughts if using MDA Solid State AESA Target Illuminator as generic X-band for the CSC why not fit it it above the SPY-7 on deck house for best surface range, had assumed older semi-active ESSM and SM-2 would have reached EOL by time CSC operational, otherwise possibility of this
