Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
2bn EUR, this puts the price of a T31 with 32 camm at roughly £360m.
Not bad i'd say.

Type 31/Arrowhead 140 is a British development of a Danish design. It's now a British design.Jdam wrote:A British company is trying to sell a Danish design, constructed in Greece to the Polish Navy
Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Euros - I would think. 500m Euro per ship, including a slightly better level of equipment, plus a multi-year support package. In the same ball-park, as they say.

Has it been released how much of the design has change from the Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates?RichardIC wrote:Type 31/Arrowhead 140 is a British development of a Danish design. 500m Euro per ship, just seems a bit expensive compared to what we are paying, I know we are repurposing some equipment but I assume the lower overheads in Greece would help drive the costs down.
Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Considering that only France did show support against Turkey recently, IMHO it would be stupid for Greeks to buy anything than French frigates...

What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.

Would that also include the costs to set up the production line in Greece & support costs ?
Does anybody know how much the 76mm is compared to our 57mm also the 36 CAMM per ship from new must cost a lot more than the 12 the RN are getting....
Atleast if the Hellinic navy go for the T31, they will be reasonably equipped with harpoon type missiles aswell

France showing support and actually providing it are two different things as so many Arab nations found out.abc123 wrote:Considering that only France did show support against Turkey recently, IMHO it would be stupid for Greeks to buy anything than French frigates...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
If this were to go ahead, presumably we'd see HMG underwrite the deal or provide a loan as per the potential Ukrainian deal??
Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
If it became a total package as suggested, 4 General Purpose Frigates (T-31), 3-4 Interim Frigates (T-23) and the modernisations of the Mekos it would be a very valuable and interesting programme.
Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
I've seen it in all the stories I've read this quarter that T31 in uk service will have 24 camm.

I'll admit, not the most conclusive evidence but:Roders96 wrote:I've seen it in all the stories I've read this quarter that T31 in uk service will have 24 camm.
The rather impressive, large scale Amalgam model had every permutation of VLS but a 12-cell launcher. Seems odd that they would ignore such an module if the RN was expecting that exact specification.
I am yet to see any negatives in this story (if accurately reported), though do wonder if it would be in everyone's interests to divert two T31s from the Rosyth line, following two GP T23s sent ASAP. Will give more time to set up a line in Greece, perhaps adjust the production schedule at Rosyth and allow the Royal Navy some breathing room.

Do we have 4 GP T23 we could give without being embarrassed about there condition.

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Basically good news, but even if this sales works, it will contribute almost NOTHING to Rosyth. Yes for training at Greek, some staffs will go there, and some initial block may be built in Rosyth, but most of the staff are unrelated...

Would be very good for Babcocks so indirectly that benefits Rosyth.donald_of_tokyo wrote:Basically good news, but even if this sales works, it will contribute almost NOTHING to Rosyth. Not going to happen tho. The great democratic EEC will not allow it. Greek arms will be twisted.

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Along with today's announcement, the Defence Secretary stated the government was committed to building "the next generation of frigates, the Type 32".
It seems to be the belief that these are just "export versions" of the Type 31, so I've added Type 32 to the topic title. Freel free to discuss any news regarding it here.

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Watching Boris at PMQ's, I think he only mentioned the Type 32 in the context of his "shipbuilding renaissance" and said the RN would have a fleet of 8 Type 26 and 5 Type 31. I don't remember there being any mention of the 32 in RN service. Seems more like an export derivative of a design that was already supposed to be geared towards exports .
Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Make no mistake the link between a Tory No10 and the Telegraph is a strong one, especially on Comms. Wouldn't be in there in a long read announcement like that if it wasn't true. The Armchair Soldier wrote:Watching Boris at PMQ's, I think he only mentioned the Type 32 in the context of his "shipbuilding renaissance" and said the RN would have a fleet of 8 Type 26 and 5 Type 31. Could yet be canned in another financial Armageddon, which is on the way, but it is clear the govt expects another batch of T3x for RN service.

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
If I had to take a guess, build them for the navy, so they can then sell them "ready from the ranks" to nations, like what France did with FREMM.
Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Assuming these new Type 32s are GP due to the 30 series designation, could they possibly be a slightly adjusted reconfiguration of the initial Type 31 design?
If they are intended to operate alongside the other two classes, it seems like a quick way to get them into service within the 2030s would be using the same basic Arrowhead 140 design and outfitting them for different specialised missions such as land-attack, humanitarian missions or anti-ship warfare.

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
They're definitely likely to go for the lowest risk option, and this may mean the T32 is quite close to the Iver Huidtfelt in Danish service.
This would be a fantastic thing, ofcourse.
