I do like that picture, shows what a clean and uncluttered design the QE really is. Also how really sensible we were to go with two really big rather than three or four small. Reality is we would never have got four and I'm pretty certain the third would have gone in the 2010 axe. I for one am extremely grateful to Dr John Reid.R686 wrote:Looking at that shot and remembering that at one time they were talking 300odd metres long, would it have fit in that dock or was another dock being planned to be used?RichardIC wrote:Defiance wrote:You can find shots when QNLZ was in drydock in Scotland, with Illustrious sat in the adjacent dock, that does a good job of it for me!

Great video and some terrific flying shots. I also noted that a USMC Major has been having some fun on HMS QE, I must have missed that.

From the articles I’ve read there are 4 pilots for these tests. 1 RN, 1 RAF, 1 BAe (civilian ex military) and the US Marine CorpsPhillyJ wrote:Great video and some terrific flying shots. I also noted that a USMC Major has been having some fun on HMS QE, I must have missed that.
Like the video as well!
I’d be interested to have the opinion of the Marine Corps pilot at the end of these trials as a semi independent view on all aspects of HMS QNLZ.
Seems LM are really using these trials to sell the F35 and who can blame them. We (the UK) should be doing the same with the ship and British shipbuilding/engineering if things really are going as well as they seem from this distance.
If the only “major” issue has been the loose propeller blade and leaking seal (though it could have been a lot more serious) compared to the issues with say the CdG on it’s initial test outings, and they can go to integrating night flying barely 2 days after first F35B landing it really is incredibly impressive.
Sure there’ll be more hiccups to come, it’s what trials are for, and without wanting to jinx it, bravo to all involved.

An interesting video. It looks like the US supplied the deck handling crew with these jets.
Also interesting to note the rapid change in exhaust nozzle direction as the jet clears the ramp. It puts extra effort into the lift phase at the lower speed off of the ramp.

“It’ll be the return of maritime aviation fixed-wing to the U.K.,” said Royal Navy Cmdr. Stephen Crockatt, team leader of UK personnel embedded within the ITF at both Pax River and Edwards Air Force Base, California. “We’ll do the [ship] trials and collect the data so next year the U.K. can do an operational trial. Then the U.K. will have jets back at sea — a capability we haven’t had in a long time.”

"Around 200 supporting staff from the ITF, including pilots, engineers, maintainers and data analysts, will take two F-35Bs test aircraft aboard the Royal Navy's newest aircraft carrier this fall and are expected to conduct 500 take offs and landings during their test period at sea."

We saw similar with the land based testing ramp, although I expect that the low WoD makes it more obvious as the CV looked to be only travelling at maybe 10 knots. As WoD increases the angle of change might reduce. IMHO.swoop wrote: Also interesting to note the rapid change in exhaust nozzle direction as the jet clears the ramp. (MoD) 9th October 2018
Why the MoD have chosen to share this almost 14 months later I do not know....Overview of the MDP operation, alongside Hampshire Police and the Royal Navy, when the HMS Queen Elizabeth Carrier arrived in Portsmouth Harbour on 16 August 2017.

He was thinking I should fly up to NY to see the carrier. Not a bad idea at all. But ony if she was open for walkthrus.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I would be surprised if that would be an option.Ron5 wrote: But ony if she was open for walkthrus.

QE got her visitor today as expected
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Quick! Get the pilots blind drunk and get a team to paint roundels on the sides and 'Royal' before 'Navy'. When they sober up explain that parking is at your own liability on Big Lizzie and possession being 9/10 of the law.CameronPerson wrote:

Don't take much to persuade a Marine to drink, invite some ladies and they'll have half the squadrons Ospreys on deck to chose fromJensy wrote:Quick! 3 days old piece - The head of the US marine force stationed in the Top End has been relieved of his command for drink-driving on Darwin's nightclub strip. -

The way the bulbous bow was almost breaking the surface confirmed that. Not very fast at all.WhiteWhale wrote:We saw similar with the land based testing ramp, although I expect that the low WoD makes it more obvious as the CV looked to be only travelling at maybe 10 knots. You know you've got a big carrier, when even an Osprey looks small on deck.CameronPerson wrote:QE got her visitor today as expected

Really nice, clear view of the forward flight deck. Look at all that space!
