Project “Crystal Ball” might become appropriate, but of course no “Control”.

On a UK aircraft carrier, we'll see I suppose.Ron5 wrote:A lot of countries are running lots of loyal wingman type programs so I think it's a pretty safe bet we'll be seeing them. Probably sooner rather than later.topman wrote:I wonder how much of all this will remain a marketing drawing.

THE Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier has sprung a leak — just weeks before she sets off on her maiden round-the-world voyage.
Thousands of gallons of salt water flooded the 65,000-ton HMS Queen Elizabeth as she sailed from Portsmouth to Scotland last month.

I'm not sure what my job has to do with the chances of them ever operating off a UK carrier?Ron5 wrote:Nearly forgot you were RAF.topman wrote:On a UK aircraft carrier, we'll see I suppose.Ron5 wrote:A lot of countries are running lots of loyal wingman type programs so I think it's a pretty safe bet we'll be seeing them. Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Just been having another thought experiment today (slow day) but could a qe class be lengthened by having a middle section inserted ,not saying it needs one some say are too big anyway but could it be done or just impossible now ? Thanks
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
If enough money was found anything is possible...lots of the carriers after WW2 had major refits with angled decks putting lifts in different places etc,
Not sure but i think HMS Victorious ( R38 ) had the most done to her...?

Yes, and its reasonably common in the civilian world. But...it would affect the hull form, handling and stability of the ship so would need to be done with a lot of care. It would obviously take a while and cost a fortune as well...inch wrote:Just been having another thought experiment today (slow day) but could a qe class be lengthened by having a middle section inserted ,not saying it needs one some say are too big anyway but could it be done or just impossible now ? I don't think there is anywhere in the UK this could be done but I can't think of any reason why not.Timmymagic wrote:Yes, and its reasonably common in the civilian world. What’s wrong with Rosyth?Ron5 wrote:I don't think there is anywhere in the UK this could be done but I can't think of any reason why not.

Dock not long enough surely?ETH wrote:What’s wrong with Rosyth?Ron5 wrote:I don't think there is anywhere in the UK this could be done but I can't think of any reason why not.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Depends how much of an extension we’re talking. The QE class as it is now was not the longest iteration in the design process. The dock they were assembled in is about 320m long so gives some more wiggle room.Ron5 wrote:Dock not long enough surely?ETH wrote:What’s wrong with Rosyth?Ron5 wrote:I don't think there is anywhere in the UK this could be done but I can't think of any reason why not.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Cheers you guys ,like I said before don't think needs it or would happen but just wondered if possible ,and by your answers it could be possible ,50yrs service life along time and I quess we never know what future plans might be needed say 30 yrs from now ,so there is lots of scope if you guys are correct , cheers

The main dock at Harland and Wolff Belfast is 550m long the second dock 350m.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
You would, in theory, need dock large enough for the carrier to be cut in two, the halves pulled apart to leave enough room for the new center block to be built in situ before pushing them all back together. The dock would also need to have enough infrastructure to support building a new block and a skilled workforce.
We're talking about a dock upwards of 400m in length in an active shipyard. I don't think there is such a location in the UK.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Busy few months coming up for the Queen Elizabeth.
I dont know why but I thought the Price of Wales was scheduled for Joint Warrior. I must be that desperate to see her back at sea I am getting confused.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Interesting they may send 2 ships the black sea....
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Could they not cut a QEC were they wanted to put the block in, then float out the rear section then float in a pre made section ( from portsmouth? as an example ) weld it in place then float in the rear section? heck of Lot of work would be involvedRon5 wrote:You would, in theory, need dock large enough for the carrier to be cut in two, the halves pulled apart to leave enough room for the new center block to be built in situ before pushing them all back together. Be better ( maybe cheaper, if no bells n whistles ) of building a smaller 3rd flat top to replace HMS Ocean but interesting idea

Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Just very surprised they will send 2 ships instead of 1 to the black sea, Could the whole QEC group go to the black sea for a week or so, as a show of commitment to the region or would that be overdoing it...
