Once the jets are aboard it’ll be time for the armchair Admirals and JC4PM twitter pages to replace the “no aircraft line” with; “look at the yanks they’ve got dozens and we can’t even manage twelve”SKB wrote:

Just saw that article. Apparently, fuel wasn't transferred but the lines were passed between the vessels...benny14 wrote:https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-l ... -up-at-seaWrekin1410 wrote:Out of interest do you have a link to the RAS news. I missed that.

Bad weather stopped the RAS trial but look at the size of QE! Compare that to an Invinvible doing a RAS and seeing two vessels in near size, this is completely the opposite

Just think we first saw the scale model mock up of this back in 2013 during water tank tests

And a further testament to the hard work of the crew so far..

You have to admit, we know how to make some good looking ships.

HMS QE conducted 450 Chinook and 540 Merlin deck landings during the trials.
I think it would be fair to say that the Chinook and Merlin are qualified to fly from the carrier.
Next up Wildcat and Apache? I am speculating here, but I think she will get her F35 gear and weapons fitted during this period and then sail out for a second stage of helicopter trials to qualify Wildcat and Apache, this will then allow her to declare "Initial Operating Capability (IOC) as a Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH)". She will then be able to carry out the LPH role and support the Royal Marines during their exercise in the US while we have our 2-4 F35-Bs onboard doing F35 trials.

Is it too much to ask, for QNLZ and PWLS to have some 30 F35B's each on board when they sail ? That flightdeck is massive !!The Armchair Soldier wrote:You have to admit, we know how to make some good looking ships.

A really nice article via Save the Royal Navy picking up on most of the recent posts but with a little more on the flight envelopes tested during the rotary wing trials.
Amongst the positives reported
“The trials have helped vindicate the design of the ship, in particular, the unique twin islands which help reduce wind turbulence over the deck. It is encouraging to note that the trials team have reported the ship can be cleared to operate aircraft in a much wider range of conditions than expected.”
Also, amongst other things, mentions the spoof AIS and confirms the reasons speculated here for the bow south without specifically naming CIWS.

Two islands reduce wind turbulence?
Color me extremely doubtful. Such large and oddly shaped islands must be a nightmare. The only saving grace being the width of the deck.

Apologies if already posted, but I don't think this has been.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Perhaps they mean 2 small islands create less turbulence than 1 longer island like on the invicibles ?Ron5 wrote:Two islands reduce wind turbulence?

Remember this?
The Fleet Air Arm Museum has almost raised enough funds for a "real" ski-jump ramp and F-35B for its existing HMS Queen Elizabeth replica playground in Yeovilton. They're only £300 short of their £5,500 target!

I hope they put some catch nets around the ramp sides and front!

Well yes, I think it is too much to ask if the ships are being deployed in the LPH role. Of course it will look impressive, but to have such valuable assets as the F-35B together with aircrew and support deployed on board when not required would be gross misuse of resources. One of the great design features of the QEC/F-35B combination is that the vessel can transform from LPH to strike carrier at relatively short notice, with far less effort spent on carrier qualification of aircrew than a CATOBAR ship. I've follwed this forum and it's predecessor avidly for years and the great moment I am most loking forward to will be the first SRVL.QEC Eye in the SKY wrote:Is it too much to ask, for QNLZ and PWLS to have some 30 F35B's each on board when they sail ?
