16:50 - Tugs AIS showing PoW is halfway through the basin gate. Some of the tugs are making their way out through the southern lock, by-passing the main gate.

16:55 - Seven tugs outside the basin now, only two behind PoW's stern.

(Forces TV) 19th September 2019 (recorded before sailing)
Britain's latest aircraft carrier has set sail from Rosyth dockyard to begin sea trials for the first time. HMS Prince of Wales, the sister ship of HMS Queen Elizabeth, will be tested in areas including speed and propulsion over the coming weeks. The ship's crew will also be put through its paces, taking part in flood and fire safety exercises. We went to see the carrier in Rosyth just before it left the dockyard...

I also hope they remembered to remove that Tawny owl (nicknamed "Lightning") from the hangar deck rafters!

19:00 - AIS shows all tugs have stopped in the deep water channel immediately south of the basin. PoW has presumably dropped anchor.

A fantastic day. Lots more milestones to come as the Carrier capability is developed further. But it does feel like we've reached the end of the beginning at least.

Many thanks to all who have posted updates, their observations and (particularly) their photos over the years, especially those who have followed it right from the start on the epic MP.net thread from when they started the builds in 2009, through all the SDSR worries to the block builds, float outs etc. CJ, SKB and SDL in particular have made some wonderful sustained contributions that have allowed many of us to follow the build from afar with a level of detail that we would simply not have been able to get elsewhere. It really is appreciated. Thanks to the Mods too for trying to keep us all on the right track (can't be easy..)

Congratulations to the RN and ACA, quite how they pulled it off I'll never know...

Here's to many more years of developments in this fascinating programme. Thanks all.

Apologies for linking to such a rag as the Daily Mail here. Apparently she's not fully finished on the inside though. Lots of complaining according to the Mail.

There might well be some truth in that but certainly not a bomb site from what I heard. My lad is more than happy with his accomodation and I would post pics of it but cannot here due to attachment limits being reached. And FFS, they've already started calling her 'Big Charlie'

Not the crew, at least not the ones my nipper has contact with. It's on the DM title and they are one of the media sources that keep calling QE 'Big Lizzie'

That's nothing. Imagine when the Duke of Cambridge eventually becomes the next heir to the throne and titled as Prince of Wales....

"Big Willie"

A few people are saying this is accommodation for airwing etc. not for the main crew, so is not required right now. As a result its better to get the ship out on trials and finish it on the following alongside periods. Thats not that unusual. It is after all not the final handover of the ship.

IIRC the Officers Mess in QE was installed when they were alongside in Portsmouth (along with the Queens Head fitting out). Looks like the Officers Mess has been completed in Rosyth this time.

I think the only real use for the article and pictures is that it gives us the first look (that I'm aware of) of the Officers Mess on PoW...looks like Trimline have been involved again.

https://www.trimline.co.uk/by-appointme ... elizabeth/

And of most importance, this is the first view of the Wardroom carpet.....a crucial development that we've all been waiting for.

HMS Prince of Wales - Grey Carpet

Not going to lie, I think Prince of Wales' is superior to Queen Elizabeth's...we may need to do a poll to get the matter settled once and for all...

Maybe a sweepstake on the name of the onboard Senior Rates 'Pub'...
