Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
i'm being very optimistic but when QE exits the basin in 6 weeks time wouldn't it be great if POW left straight after for sea trials & a great photo op !!!! but isn't her initial sea trials slated for summer ? so probably not.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I think the photo of them both at sea together will be as QE is heading out to the US for more trials in the summer
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
More likely, lets hope QE would have a few F35 and helicopters onboard by then, if not I could imagine the headlines...

Well done to all involved

Well, if that happens, then, for once, the headlines will be right...serge750 wrote:More likely, lets hope QE would have a few F35 and helicopters onboard by then, if not I could imagine the headlines...
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

We could always put some of those "Plastic" F-35s on the deck and the media wouldn't know the difference.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Don't give the politicians ideas !!!
They could always could call them "dynamic airflow test airframes" to test the airflow around the carrier when under surge conditions, or crane the old sea harriers on !!
Either way it looks at though it's going to be a good summer with seeing more than 2 x F35b on deck, didn't someone mention 7 ? & POW sea trials ?

Thank you very much!Caribbean wrote:Hi Brasil, have a look at this document - the link below should put you into the section on Artisan. There is also some stuff on Sampson as well. It's a bit unclear in places, presumably because some stuff was still "sensitive information" at the time the document was written, but it looks to me like it's a rotating AESA system. Overall an interesting read. as wellBrasil wrote:So its a rotatory AESA? I have not been able to see anything official stating Artisan 3D is AESA.

Edit - its worth reading the section on the Mesar system, just before the Artisan section - gives a bit more info on the technology involved

Qe design for India maybe not , maybe Russia now going to try sell admiral kuznetsov carrier to India for them to repair at a knock down price ,I wouldn't but it past this happening either ,it's whether India would want a China carrier copy and a old carrier again and save some cash or have they set their hearts on a new design/ build like we class ?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I hope Babcock/ACA/RN release some QE on the blocks photos, It'd be interesting to see how much marine growth there is (or isn't!) on her hull after nearly 5 years in salt water.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Knock-down price?! You do know how the Vikramaditya purchase went? When Russia offered to do the work themselves for a knock-down price and then arbitrarily doubled it once the Indians were in too deep to pull out.inch wrote:Qe design for India maybe not , maybe Russia now going to try sell admiral kuznetsov carrier to India for them to repair at a knock down price ,I wouldn't but it past this happening either ,it's whether India would want a China carrier copy and a old carrier again and save some cash or have they set their hearts on a new design/ build like we class ?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Yes but I didn't mean Russia do the fix on it cos as stated they don't have the means at the moment otherwise they just fix it and keep it themselves ,so I meant Russia sell it to India for a knock down price and India do the work to fix it

The displacement has had an impressive increase, tooinch wrote: sell it to India for a knock down price and India do the work to fix it

Very little. Modern paints make this a non problem these days.SKB wrote:I hope Babcock/ACA/RN release some QE on the blocks photos, It'd be interesting to see how much marine growth there is (or isn't!) on her hull after nearly 5 years in salt water.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Just offer to sell them the old CTOL plans for the CVF and let them solve any problems.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
India has just spent a lot of coin on leasing another Akula sub, so possibly not.inch wrote:...maybe Russia now going to try sell admiral kuznetsov carrier to India for them to repair at a knock down price ,I wouldn't but it past this happening either
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Article in defence journal saying 130000 tonnes in the 2 carriers ,I was just wondering what will be the total tonnage of the fleet then pow comes on stream ? .
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
No SAM’s will be fitted to eithe CVF, other wise the RN would need to justify the T45 at £1 billion a pop.
There are more pressing need to be met before a discussion on arming CVF.

USN has armed carriers escorted by ABs and Ticos.Tinman wrote:No SAM’s will be fitted to eithe CVF, other wise the RN would need to justify the T45 at £1 billion a pop.
I'm all in favour of discussing issues in order of priority, but the whole issue of carrier strike sustainability is a priority. There is a deficit of escorts. What's your solution?Tinman wrote:There are more pressing need to be met before a discussion on arming CVF.

There is also a deficit in all aircraft types that will be operated from themRichardIC wrote:I'm all in favour of discussing issues in order of priority, but the whole issue of carrier strike sustainability is a priority. There is a deficit of escorts. What's your solution?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Isn't there an argument to increase the missile payload of the escorts for the carrier , Im not sure how many missiles are carried by U.S.N escort groups in defence of the carrier and others but it would likely be several times what the R.N is likely to carry for defence of its carrier

I wonder where the idea of operating one in LitM mode came from That one bristling with Chinooks, Apaches etcTempest414 wrote:There is also a deficit in all aircraft types that will be operated from them

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Yes we can take land based helicopters and use them on the Carriers but they are limited in that they take a lot of time and work to fold up the rotors and to much room if you don't ( we have seen 1 Chinook unfolded takes up the space of 4 folded Merlin's ) plus they have limited protection from sea spay however this will be improved on the new Apache E when it comes in. also add in that both the Chinook and Apache's main role is battle field lift and support of the Army and not navy
For me to do what we are looking to do and use both carrier and 2 new FLSS we would need
6 Sqn's of F-35 with 10 jets each 3 FAA and 3 RAF ( to allow 20 jets to deploy on each carrier and 30 in surge)
move back to 40 ASW Merlin's easing deployments rotation
add 5 Merlin HC-4's to have 30
have 10 Merlin AEW
add 12 CH-53K for heavy lift ( a heavy lift helicopter designed from the start to operate from carriers )
of course there is no money for this at this time so it is make do as always
