Is it defferently 280m as no matter how many places and times Iv checks I keep finding 2 different 280m and 284m, I know it's only 4m but just has me confused.
Iv been finding the same misnomer with the beam find 70m and 73m

280m seems accurate, I just edited my photoshop of the QEvsCVN image I uploaded earlier to make the image as wide and as "long" as a CVN at 3330 pixels across. Then I measured how many pixels "long" the QE is, its 2800 pixels. So 280m it is. And I measured her width, she IS 73m wide at flightdeck level.

But this is all assuming a CVN is actually exactly 333m long.

It depends on the Nimitz if I remember right they can varry from 331m to 335m

Am I correct in thinking cvn about 78+ deck width and 70 m qe class, it definitely looks 8meter or more wider in the overhead pic

My understanding is that QE is 74m but the source for that seems to have changed to 73m. The 70m reference is just a rounding down of the actual figure - something which is typical with British defence. I recall that when QE set sail for sea trials from Rosyth and had to exit the narrow entrance to the Forth estuary, one of the ships crew mentioned that it was over 75m wide.

So about 2/3 size of a cvn all in all as has been stated many times ,still next largest carrier around after cvn till China new carriers then maybe France and then India future carrier overshadow her ,but ok for UK ,need escorts now and long range hypo defence and attack more pressing issues oh and manpower lol,so carrier big enough

The Nimitz and Ford class have larger hangars but actual flight deck size appears similar ,I believe there could be a lot of people waiting for the full flight deck picture as well

Flight deck size is almost 90% of Nimitz class CVN size. (Displacement is about 2/3rds).

It looks like the RN saved a few pennies when they painted over the ship's crest on the front of the ramp..

The linked RN site says the Wärtsiläs diesels (there are four aboard) were fired up, but the two Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines have yet to be started.

"partial vertical take off"?? That's a new one.

Shouldn't it be Seaborn Rolling Vertical Takeoff" - SRVT to be consistent?

Is anyone able to explain why the deck crew are using those little flags to wave off the aircraft?

I’ve never noticed this as part of US carrier operations and was wondering if this was something the Royal Navy has always done or it’s new?

To my uneducated eyes it just looks unnecessary or worse. At the end of that last video the crew member was struggling just to hold onto them.

It seems the RN have always used flags. They love tradition.
Some video proof:

1940's - Flags at 3:39

1950's - Flags at 0:55

1960's - Flags at 2:18

1970's - Flags at 7:58

2000's - Flags at 0:19

It does look as though the flags are attached via a wire strap or something like that to the wrist or glove like when your a kid with your gloves sown to your sleeves so you don't loose them... he he
