Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I wonder if there is any role for a CTO with F35 on QE class? The early cgi showed them taking off conventionally without any obvious use of the lift fan etc? Anyone know if that has been tested or the idea binned?

Pretty much just low budget CGI lacking animations for the 3D model of the F-35's engine, wouldn't read anything into it.Digger22 wrote:I wonder if there is any role for a CTO with F35 on QE class? CTO with Vertical Landing is about the worse combination possible.

not news, but a bit of fun from @HMSQnlz

QE might not have mentioned Top Gun, but the RN released this video 29 September....

The F-135 puts out a lot of thrust, but like the Russian's and Chnese have found out with their STOBAR carriers you're not going to be able to carry much off the deck in the way of fuel or stores, so there isn't much point trying really..Digger22 wrote:I wonder if there is any role for a CTO with F35 on QE class?

Interesting they’ve only made a combined total of 404 landings and takeoffs when originally over 500 were expected (from September quotes at the start of westlant18).hovematlot wrote: That's it then for this year. Looking forward to next years Westlant19 with 617 Squadron Embarked.
A sign of just how well the marriage of ship and aircraft helped by all the years of planning have gone?

I was surprised by the cgi showing CTO in the first place. Sometimes these things are done by accident, sometimes they can show a train of thought.Timmymagic wrote:The F-135 puts out a lot of thrust, but like the Russian's and Chnese have found out with their STOBAR carriers you're not going to be able to carry much off the deck in the way of fuel or stores, so there isn't much point trying really..Digger22 wrote:I wonder if there is any role for a CTO with F35 on QE class?
Clearly not in this case.

HMS Queen Elizabeth, RFA Tidespring, HMS Monmouth and Blackjack.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Unfortunately D lock mods and modifications to northern jetty to create a QE dock have vanished since last year... guess there is not a penny for that.PhillyJ wrote:Another model of HMNB Portsmouth with both QE Class at home. Borrowed from HMNB Portsmouth FB page.
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

Possibly, although the model is not 100% accurate as it has HMS Victory with all 3 of here main masts at full height, not sure if that will ever happen again.Gabriele wrote:Unfortunately D lock mods and modifications to northern jetty to create a QE dock have vanished since last year... guess there is not a penny for that.

Might just depend on how short of ships they get lolPhillyJ wrote:Possibly, although the model is not 100% accurate as it has HMS Victory with all 3 of here main masts at full height, not sure if that will ever happen again.Gabriele wrote:Unfortunately D lock mods and modifications to northern jetty to create a QE dock have vanished since last year... guess there is not a penny for that.

You can see that the Nimitz is bigger but not by a great deal, really shows how massive she isimperialman wrote:HMS Queen Elizabeth alongside in Norfolk, courtesy of Stefann Watkins/Planet Labs on Twitter.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Just ashame she wasn't bearthed other way around for a real good end to end comparison photo ,but yes alot closer in size than the invicable class for sure but you got to admit then American carriers are huge concidering they been about since the 1960s I think
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
About 1/6 or 16-ish % shorter,

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
That'd not too bad considering the nose of the Nimitz is at longer than that of the QESKB wrote:

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
You could pick QE up and put her on Nimitz deck

Another illustration of the comparisons.
Personally I think the QE's are big enough Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
These sort of images need to be taken with a pinch of salt, if you look the America class looks wider than Cavour when it's only 32m beam to 39m beamPoiuytrewq wrote:Another illustration of the comparisons.Personally I think the QE's are big enough
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Just done a measurement of QE's overall length from that aerial photo, the QE is exactly 280 metres long when compared to a 333 metre long CVN.
(QE: 918.635 feet, CVN: 1092.52 feet)
