Not sure why I even read the news. A couple delights that I read on a Sun article today. RIP the days of actual journalism.
"sister ship Big Lizzie sprang a leak"
"was suffering from an embarrassing leak."
"200 litres of sea water pour in every hour.
It’s feared repairs could run into the millions and mean the ship may have to return to dry dock."
"faulty Queen Elizabeth was fitted out."
"It’s pretty important for keeping the water out. It’s leaking at approximately 200 litres an hour which is pretty significant"

Pesky facts getting in the way of a good story:

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
The Sun could have looked at this story before running with their ridiculous faux outrage piece on QE. All ships can be prone to delays and defects found during trials, in the case of QE hers are horribly insignificant in the grand scheme

I hear this a lot, but no one can give a definitive answer on how she differs from the originalSKB wrote:

If true when QE goes in for her amphibious mods is it expected she'll gain that much weight ?R686 wrote:I hear this a lot, but no one can give a definitive answer on how she differs from the originalSKB wrote:

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-l ... first-timePrince of Wales is 3,000 tonnes heavier than her sister was at the same stage - as the second ship in the class, construction and fitting out has moved more swiftly thanks to the lessons learned building HMS Queen Elizabeth.
Originally planned for 2018, the 'undocking' of the carrier took place ahead of schedule and just three months after the carrier was officially named by HRH the Duchess of Rothesay, as the Duchess of Cornwall is titled in Scotland.
The next milestone in the ship's life will be the first running up of the generators and gas turbines, bringing the ship to life, which are earmarked for middle of 2018, followed by sea trials in 2019.
Don't think the 3000 tons have anything to do with amphibious mods. At least, the most of them don't.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
your right Gabriele the 2 ships are going to be the same weight in the end up, its just if they were 2 teams having a race pow team has managed to put more of the same stuff that's going on both ships that weighs 3000t on pow than the qe team has at this stage .that's what I understand it saying
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Yeah from my understanding its simple mods like wider passageways and doorways, unless they have made changes to the troop accommodation and explosive handling magazines. Would be interesting to see what has actually changedGabriele wrote:

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Presumably because they could. Leave her in there and have full access in the drydock for longer vs rushing out QE to make way for PoW and working on QE from quayside.abc123 wrote:Why was PoW longer in the dock?SKB wrote: QE Total time: 2 years, 10 months, 19 days (1054 days)

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Could we see POW on trials earlier than 2019? There seems to be a rush now to get HMS Ocean sold off.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
She was longer in dock as their was no reason to float her out to start work on a sister ship.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I don't think PoW is actually 3,000 tonnes heavier.
They just mean its advanced faster and has been more fully constructed by this point in its development.

Absolutely and Ive been making this point down the pub nearly every night since the story 'leaked' - excuse the pun. My Rule bilge pump on my 30 ft Colvic Sailer is rated at 650 GPH, thats 650 gallons per hour so 200 litres on a 65,000 ton aircraft carrier is absolutely nothing at all. Fake news or wot?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I'd like to think they'd keep it in expectation of using it for the next MARS ships or a future pair of LPH/LHD. Can dream I guess.SKB wrote:I suppose they can start disassembling the Goliath crane now. Its jobs done.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Wonder what the year maintenance cost of the crane would be as it would be another 10 years before a replacement for the LPD's would start unless the gap it too .Dahedd wrote:I'd like to think they'd keep it in expectation of using it for the next MARS ships or a future pair of LPH/LHD. I belive the original OSD for Albion is 2033 and Bulwark 2034 from memory, that's potentially 5-6 ships including the Bays from 2027

HMS Queen Elizabeth to urgently sail to Arctic Circle in coming days to support air transport mission
The first 9 STOVL aircraft and 1 COD operation, thank god its got a ramp.
It would need a good wash down after the fact and watch were you step
