I believe the main changes are added accommodation for Royal Marines and their equipment. The carriers were originally designed to house 250 embarked troops, but the MOD are now stating POW will be capable of up to 900 in extreme conditions. So we can expect they are adding a minimum of 250-500 positions. Makes you wonder what they will be stripping to make room.

There has also been mention of enlarging corridors, from the new accommodation to allow RM to travel to the flight deck with their equipment. So some slight structural changes.

Some while ago it was being bandied around that the POW was approx 3k tons heavier than the QE. This was postulated as being due to said mods being made in regards to the amphib role.

As nothing further has been heard, and no one has been able to verify or even offer any explanation as to this claim. I would agree with you that the changes are more organisational than physical.

They talk about housing 900 as a spin. The ship can carry around 900 aircrew on top of the base crew. Gee, where have we heard that number before? :p

Basically they chose the absolute limit if you filled it with nothing but the basic crew, Royal Marines and had zero aircrew. Massive bare faced lie by Fallon to say that during the Committee.

I've been inside QE, and believe me the corridors do not need expanded and likely won't be. They're absolutely gigantic already. You could fit four combat equipped men wideways in the main thoroughfares to the hangar, for example.

Well 900 is definitly possible, if they will sleep in hanger and in corridors in sleeping bags among the aircrafts, pi** into sea and wash with a bucket of sea water and a soap- an old RN tradition...

What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

I expect that most of the extra weight comes from marine proofing the ship, putting padding on sharp corners and child locks on the sweet stuff etc.

Inside the ramp is where the bunting is stored.

The first ship to be described as a super carrier was the Ark Royal in 1938 by the New York Times that ship was 22,000 tons with a length of 920 feet.

I've been inside HMS Duncan's wardroom.

Suffice to say, those pictures make it clear why a carrier's space is so much more important for diplomacy and influence worldwide to do meetings in than an escort's.

It's a subtle, but incredibly noticeable factor when you see the 'look' it creates.

Looks like she's heading back to Portsmouth - she's near the Solent now... I hope that is a good sign that her trials have gone well!
