Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
RIP Mike

I had to go away for a few days and came back to the sad news of Desertswo's death, I'm absolutely gutted! My best wishes and condolences go out to his family

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Where once the waters of your face
Spun to my screws, your dry ghost blows,
The dead turns up its eye;
Where once the mermen through your ice
Pushed up their hair, the dry wind steers
Through salt and root and roe.
Where once your green knots sank their splice
Into the tided cord, there goes
The green unraveller,
His scissors oiled, his knife hung loose
To cut the channels at their source
And lay the wet fruits low.
Invisible, your clocking tides
Break on the lovebeds of the weeds;
The weed of love’s left dry;
There round about your stones the shades
Of children go who, from their voids,
Cry to the dolphined sea.
Dry as a tomb, your coloured lids
Shall not be latched while magic glides
Sage on the earth and sky;
There shall be corals in your beds,
There shall be serpents in your tides,
Till all our sea-faiths die.
God speed Mike

Such sad news. I always enjoyed Mike's posts,he really knew what he was talking about. You could tell he liked us lot over on this side of the pond as well. Shame he didn't get to see the two ships out at sea. RIP
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Long time lurker and have never posted, but very sad to hear this news. I have always found Mike to be an incredibly interesting and informative poster, both here and at mp.net. The inspiration from some of his stories contributed to my desire to join the RN, and I'm now going through the recruitment process. RIP. This post will be a one off probably but I think the occasion warrants it.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Sorry to hear that, like most on here I enjoyed reading about his 'exploits' whilst serving in the USN and PM'd him during the turbulent times when he wanted to leave the forum, I expressed my sadness should he do that...thankfully it was for only a short time. He talked about a lot of the Carriers and aircraft that I had grown up with as a lad bereft of any UK equivalent (Ark IV had sadly been scrapped) so my shelves were full of models of USN aircraft and carriers. RIP Mike, condolences to your family and friends.

Very sad to hear of Mike's passing. He had some fantastic anecdotes and was a formidable contributor, not to mention his lifetime of service at sea.
Rest in Peace, Mike.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
After reading all the nonsense this morning on the Russia Stronk fantasy ultra-mega-super torpedo mk6 it did make me think about two things.
1- Many people on the net really have no understanding of mechanical engineering, that thing would need warp core levels of energy density to meet even half of its claims.
and 2-
Will the CVF itself carry any hard or soft kill torpedo defences or will it be entirely dependant on it's escort 'fleet'?

I remember CGIs showing a Sea Sentor decoy outfit, with the decoy launchers located on the 30mm gun sponsons on the stern. Hopefully it hasn't been dropped to save money.
Hard Kill anti-torpedo defenses might or might not have appeared in the Royal Navy, but if they have, it's only on the submarines, for now. The Torbuster torpedo-interceptor was under consideration for Astute, but have no idea if it was purchased in the end.
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

Terrible news, indeed.
Mike could provide you with the information you asked of him, but had a pleasant way of wrapping it up with a lot of context, that made the information far more "explained". An energetic teacher who we all learned something from.
Rest peacefully Mike. Thank you for spending time with us all.
