Moved the F-35 centric posts to the F-35 thread. Feel free to resume your discussion there. Let's get back onto the subject of the carriers now.

Not sure - it was a Boeing spokesman, I think, so possibly US$, rather than AU$.

I'm assuming we still have the 4 F35B's on then, I wonder when the other 4 are planning to join the fun.

They probably won't joint until Exercise Crimson Ocean.

next years deployment apparently will consist of 2 x T45, 2 x 23 as escorts, are the americans going to send a ship aswell ?

So excited to see it !!!

Exercise Crimson Ocean should be going from 18th June to 3rd July. Currently HMS Queen Elizabeth is just undergoing basic aircraft training but this will follow on immediately from that (starting tomorrow).

Regarding force composition, as you said there will be 2 T45s and 2 T23s for CSG 21 along with a Tide-class and RFA Fort Victoria. There will probably be various allied forces joining temporarily either as they operate in local areas or as they meet up on regular operations.

I think the idea is that this exercise will partially simulate that force although I don't know how close it will be. Based on tweets from Navy Lookout there will probably be a couple Type 23s involved and RFA Fort Victoria is also supposed to take part so between them they will form a small strike group anyway. With the 8 F-35Bs there will be some air defence component to it as well, though in terms of dedicated Type 45s I'm not so sure. HMS Defender has just come out of maintenance and did some trials recently so the timing would be right to bring her into it for a week or two at least. If they can bring out a Tide-class tanker then that should be most of the fleet composed in one place.

I'm not sure if any other ships will be involved - it's certainly possible we might be joined by some one or two European frigates for a short time for some basic training in operating mixed carrier groups, though I haven't ready any sources confirming this.

As for aircraft I expect there will be at least 8 F-35Bs and 3 Merlin HM2s - it is possible some additional Merlins might be embarked on RFA Fort Victoria and there will probably be Wildcats/Merlins on the escorts. A few more helicopters could also arrive for temporary periods on HMS Queen Elizabeth for basic flight operations, though I don't have any details on that currently.

I can't see the US embarking aircraft on another nation's carrier without wanting some of their own escorts joining

And to make sure you guys don't go off invading someplace. You have history on that.

Mind you a few well placed paveways on Brussels would help move along Brexit.

Already happened when the QE was off the Eastern Coast of the US. But yes it would be nice to have US support above or beneath the waves.

So who do we invite to tag along to ensure that you guys don't go invading someplace?

USN could send the DDG-81 USS Winston S Churchill to escort the carrier. Be a nice touch. Sure to piss some folk here in the UK off

Having a US aircrafts on UK carriers defeats the very purpose of these carriers- that is: UK independent and sovereign force projection.
It would be probably cheaper to pay 5% (like JSF programe) to have a part in US carrier force, and the result would be the same or better.

What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

There will still be independent carrier operations but that's not to say a ship that is naturally configured to be ideal for cross-deck operations won't be used as such. Particularly now as the UK has a smaller fixed wing force, it makes sense for the US to take advantage.

I say take advantage because this isn't a case of them helping us out - it is mutually beneficial allied operations. They get to deploy another squadron of F-35Bs to the western pacific without needing to send out a carrier to do it while we get an additional squadron of F-35Bs to enhance air superiority and strike capabilities on our existing CSG.

We must also consider the potential benefits of “Cross-Learning” as US and UK maintenance teams work in close proximity on HMS QE or HMS PoW. If the USMC bring along a couple of MV22, we might see enough advantages to convince the MOD that a limited number need to be purchased!

Don't think there's much chance of UK purchasing MV22 ,we are skint and going to be for a very very long time,be skin of teeth lucky if they don't mothball a carrier ,think it's going to get very tight indeed after corvid struck until a cure can hopefully be found ,it's a changed world for UK finances now I'm afraid and the military budget :-(

Do you mean pay to have a UK squadron on the deployed a American carrier? interesting,

But if a UK situation cropped up on a QEC, the americans could always fly off if required, visa versa on a us carrier with a UK squadron,

Im sure we will deploy (one day :D ) without American aircraft on board, probably for shorter deployments though, north atlantic, med, FALKLADS :D , next years CSG sounds like it will be more in Americas backyard ( pacific ) so sounds a good idea to have a bit of joint venture ?

Maybe the usmc will get back & sings the praises of a smaller carrier & make congress think about a QEC design :D i know now im talking BS
