Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
For a moment there when the cons was looking to go CATOBAR I was hoping for QE as a LPH with a few F35B (like the 1st America class LPA? ) then pow as a fully fledged CVA with borrowed hawkeye's ! I'm sure it wouldn't of worked out that way, but....

That is why with only 2 x Carriers, the choice will be either EOS or WOS, to deploy a CSG full time. If any attempt is made to deploy EOS and WOS, it can then only be part-time (for both geographical locations).
Take the game of football (soccer for our cousins). You can have your defence; “Half’s”, “Full Backs” and a “Goalkeeper” (total =6), but without “Forwards” you would stand no chance against a Full strength opposing team (total =11). Now just imagine that there are 2 opposing teams, If you do not have enough “Forwards” to attack both the other goals at the same time, the result will be even more catastrophic.
Those who want to impose their will on us (whoever they may be) will see through a part-time presence and sooner or later (or both), we will pay dearly for our lack of commitment/resolve.

If we could get both albions back then that would help having another major warship available, then you may be able to get an Albion + escort or a QEC + escorts in rotation in both regions, atlantic + EOS

All well and good, but one fact is inescapable. Either way we must have more escorts and SSNs. Although I neglected to mention in in my earlier posts, it is also necessary to have sufficient RAS vessels to make the whole thing credible.

We are getting off subject here however I still feel if we build one more type 31 and get Bulwark going we could base 1 x LPD , 4 x Type 31 , 1 Bay , 4 x MCM & 1 x Wave EoS. As far as escorts go that would leave 6 x type 45 , 8 x type 23/26 and 2 type 31 = 16 escorts 8 for the Carriers and 8 for TAPS , FRE , SNMG-1&2
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Stop the fantasy ship/fleet rubbish please. Go build models of them, like the Russians do.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Aye I think it's getting like the USN going bto build a qe class variant ,is the same as the USN announcing they are going to build design a conventional powered 80k ton pie and it's going to fly in the sky

Oh dear no pic's to post oh well I am sure you will find one soonSKB wrote:Stop the fantasy ship/fleet rubbish please. Go build models of them, like the Russians do.
Plus what fantasy fleet are you talking about Bulwark the Bay and Wave class are already in the fleet as are the MCM's and the 5 type 31's are on contract to be delivered by 2028 no fantasy here
Edit: also for a large part of 2019 the RN had 1 x Bay , 1 X Wave , 3 x Escorts and 4 MCM EoS again no fantasy here

Do the teams change ends at half time, or wind the ship instead?!

I must admit to having knicked and put that on Twitter to see if any SNP MSP's pick up on it and ask the First Minister for her views on why the SFA are not involved...Ron5 wrote:A proposal for future games:

F-35B and QE did NOT do the world's first SRVL landing!
Just learned that the F-35B and HMS Queen Elizabeth were NOT involved in world's first SRVL landing.
It was already done in 2007 by Qinetiq's VAAC Harrier... on board the Charles de Gaulle!

Back in 2007, off the southern coast of France on the French carrier Charles de Gaulle, VAAC Harrier XW175 performed the world's first Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landings (SRVL). Described as a "cockamamy British idea" by a USMC test pilot, the world's first trials to assess the feasibility of the landing technique were carried out, involving multiple touch-and-go landings. This technique is to be employed in service on UK F-35B aircraft. The final step of the 2007 trials was a full stop landing.
(Aircrew Interview) 12th March 2017
Justin Paines talks about his time flying the Harrier on the VAAC programme.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
With earlier discussion on size and capability of the aircraft carriers an important feature of conventional ctol is the deployment of refueling aircraft to extend the range and coverage of the other aircraft ,the U.S.N has stated this as a desire to prevent aircraft coming into range of its carriers with long range hypersonic missiles ,I havent read of any option for carriers operating the f35b in this .
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Probably because the gov has got no money...but one day we could see something maybe a STOVL UCAV ? with the capability to do the AEW or refueling in one design ? wouldn't need to be fast just a longish endurance.. don't think we would get anything before the late 2030's/2040
That makes me think, could we one day see a STOVL long range picket style airbourne early warning subsonic autonomous aircraft with a couple of air to air missiles, (far from the carrier doing long endurance CAP/AEW ) then use the manned F35b when the picket craft have a contact?

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
That's not an SRVL either. At no time were any of the Russian aircraft relying on partial wing borne lift. They were just drifting vertical landings.djkeos wrote:Have a look at this 6:30 on the video....

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
It would take a few years to develop such a craft ,but if you were to consider the various navies that could be deploying the f35b off small carriers it might be economical for a large company to take a punt on some researchserge750 wrote:Probably because the gov has got no money...but one day we could see something maybe a STOVL UCAV ? with the capability to do the AEW or refueling in one design ? wouldn't need to be fast just a longish endurance.. don't think we would get anything before the late 2030's/2040

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
If we drop the refuelling mission (see payload figure) then this TERN design is not far off:
"According to Northrop Grumman, once fully functional, the VTOL UAV will have a range of 600 nautical miles and be able to carry 1,000 pounds of ordinance or surveillance payload.
The Tern project comes right in line with the military’s transition to relying on UAV’s for surveillance work and, in the near future, offensive capabilities as well. However, the decision to turn to a VTOL take-off paradigm shows that the military and Navy realize that while the space aboard ships and flight decks are limited, the envelope of their missions is expanding.
Apparently, Tern may be part of the solution to the military’s mission creep issues. "
The project was launched in 2014 and NG were awarded the above contract in 2016.

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

I saw a cgi concept for that version of Tern a wee while back. Every other concept of late seems to have been a tilt rotor though.

Well my Lad is on his way home today, but obviously I shall not go down to see him enter port due to the current 'Clampdown' (great Clash song by the way) but I do wonder how many will though as it has been posted on Twitter.
Not sure why they are coming home with the current situation as they will not be able to hit the pubs and clubs and carried out their first RAS yesterday, which my nipper was involved with...even with suspected cracked/broken ribs due to some larking around in his mess. so should be able to stay out at sea.
Lucky to say I've been on both the ships involved in this RAS.
