Don't forget the 8 or so Merlin HM2s that are presently assigned to be CROWSNEST platform, with a flight of 4 due to embark on whichever Carrier is at sea.

true, but it seems very quiet between 0900 and 1245...SKB wrote:Theres nothing on QHM Portsmouth Shipping Movements about that (yet?).

Not a mission you’ll get that many deployable airframes. You’d have more likelihood getting the correct 6 numbers on Saturday night.Timmymagic wrote:Fleet size is 30, with 5 usually in maintenance. So 25 left over. Stick 15 on the CSG and you're left with 10. 1 on TAPS, 3-4 on training trials etc and for a short time you could probably get 3-5 on ships.

More of the same woolly thinking, idiot Childs quotes, and Army generals expressing their dislike of carriers. Without carriers we could have more frigates - yeah great but what exactly would they escort?sea_eagle wrote:Two very interesting articles from The Economist recently. It is a paysite but I recall you can read 3 or 4 articles for free.
Aircraft-carriers are big, expensive, vulnerable—and popular

Couple of useful diagrams showing declining range of carrier aircraft since the 1950's and second chart shows effect of Chinese missile range meaning a carrier has to stand off further from the coast to stay safe.Aircraft-carriers are under threat from modern missilesEven when you add on the 500km range of the JASSM missiles the F-35 is armed with, American carriers attacking China would be well within being-struck range before they got their planes into strike range (see map).
https://www.economist.com/leaders/2019/ ... n-missilesRussia and China are both developing long-range missiles that are manoeuvrable and accurate enough to hit large ships at sea. China’s DF-21D, an anti-ship ballistic missile that can travel over 1,500km (950 miles), is already a threat.
Carriers are vulnerable? No shit Sherlock. Take a look at how many were sunk during world war 2. But what weapon isn't vulnerable? Do these clowns think Typhoons won't be shot down and Challengers not blown up? Or is this all part of some dipshit political messaging. Lefties hate carriers nearly as much as nukes.
Particularly love the French Rafales flying off CdG with a 1700 km range of action that those wimpy F-35C's of the USN can't come close to matching. And the biggest US mistake is building carriers yet every other major country in the world is doing exactly the same.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that the Type 26's are so expensive because they don't need to do the "drift & sprint" i.e. they can detect submarines while motoring at fleet speeds (15-18 knots).Jake1992 wrote:But surely the T23/26 will need ASW merlins on board as they sprint ahead and drift behind the rest of the CSG so would be a good distance away from ASW merlins on the QEAethulwulf wrote:Neither. If 9 ASW Merlins are part of the CSG, all 9 will be on a QEC and the T23/26 escorts will most likely have Wildcats on board.Jake1992 wrote:A question Iv been wondering is in regards to the 9 ASW merlins that are to be part of the CSG are these all 9 on the QE in addition to the 2 on the T23/26 or including the ones on the escorts ?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
That would be impressive and could justify the cost as they’d also be able to contribute to AAW then.Ron5 wrote:It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that the Type 26's are so expensive because they don't need to do the "drift & sprint" i.e. they can detect submarines while motoring at fleet speeds (15-18 knots).Jake1992 wrote:But surely the T23/26 will need ASW merlins on board as they sprint ahead and drift behind the rest of the CSG so would be a good distance away from ASW merlins on the QEAethulwulf wrote:Neither. Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
With regards to anti shipping missiles the threat of these have been known of since ww2 that they have become more sophisticated and dangerous to aircraft carriers more recently strongly supports any argument to augment the escorting vessels with more capabilities to meet those threats , to put it another wayif you cant afford to protect it dont build it ,there are enough precedences for whats happened to unprotected warships including the previous Prince of Wales
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Still nothing showing on the website, I wonder if the wonderful British weather has delayed the move as it's horrible out there at the moment. I did receive an email from the QHM mailing list overnight saying it was scheduled for 1030 today though.PhillyJ wrote:true, but it seems very quiet between 0900 and 1245...SKB wrote:Theres nothing on QHM Portsmouth Shipping Movements about that (yet?).

Agree with almost everything here - but I do think the US mistake is wasting too much money with them. They should be getting twice the fleet with half the resources. So much waste in their defence industrial complex.Ron5 wrote:Particularly love the French Rafales flying off CdG with a 1700 km range of action that those wimpy F-35C's of the USN can't come close to matching. 11:30 - PoW is still bows north at Victory Jetty with gangways on. No tug activity.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I guess the weather put them off, SD Indulgent did venture out earlier this morning but is now coming back in, nothing scheduled for tomorrow either according to the QHM website so very mysterious.SKB wrote:11:30 - PoW is still bows north at Victory Jetty with gangways alongside. No tug activity.

We’ve had some pretty good weather out here on #WESTLANT19. Good job we’ve got 40mm thick ballistic glass windows and 8 foot long windscreen wipers.

The DT-3 period of flight trials is due to test high deck motion launch and recovery, and shipborne rolling vertical landing envelope expansion (and some other outstanding test points).cockneyjock1974 wrote:Any word on SRVL for the latest deployment? Surely with the amount of Daves they had on board, they must have tried something. I’ve seen no video or reports about it.
DT-3 is scheduled for early 2021 on board Prince of Wales, which has a full length Bedford Array SRVL visual landing aid.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Early 2021? That doesn't leave a lot of time for QE first deployment mid to late 2021? But I suspose at least the relevent skills will be fresh in the pilots mind.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I suspect for the weapon loads likely to be carried, at least initially, that SRVL will be unnecessary.

While SRVL will undoubtedly be useful for the RN, it should be remembered that the USMC have already successfully completed a number of operational tours of F35b's onboard LHDs without the use of any SRVL.

They are the largest and most powerful ships ever built for the Royal Navy.
Earlier this year, both HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales were at sea simultaneously for the first time.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
But how many times were stores jettisoned to make vl weight? And remember usmc stores by and large are cheaper than uk`s.Aethulwulf wrote:While SRVL will undoubtedly be useful for the RN, it should be remembered that the USMC have already successfully completed a number of operational tours of F35b's onboard LHDs without the use of any SRVL.

By the way, interested though I am in further SRVL Trials, does anyone know, now that HMS Dragon & HMS Northumberland are on their way home just what is comprising the HMS QE escort ?

I suspect a QE Class moving at Pompey Revs won't need one...there aren't many subs that could keep up, or surface ships.Scimitar54 wrote:By the way, interested though I am in further SRVL Trials, does anyone know, now that HMS Dragon & HMS Northumberland are on their way home just what is comprising the HMS QE escort ?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Especially as they want to get back sharpish before PWLS nabs her Jetty again, they should have left some QNLZ Crest beach towels draped over the Spacer units before she left for Westlant19.Timmymagic wrote:I suspect a QE Class moving at Pompey Revs won't need one...there aren't many subs that could keep up, or surface ships.Scimitar54 wrote:By the way, interested though I am in further SRVL Trials, does anyone know, now that HMS Dragon & HMS Northumberland are on their way home just what is comprising the HMS QE escort ?
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
No PoW movements listed on QHM for today or tomorrow.
Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
No indeed. I spoke to my nipper and he reckons it might not be happening now, so not sure what went on there. To calm my 'I'm not going mad and did really see that from the QHM' mind I retireved the email I got late Monday evening and here it is...SKB wrote:No PoW movements listed on QHM for today or tomorrow.
