Don't believe so, no.

An upgrade to the AESA variant of the same radar wouldn't go amiss though, the Smart-L EWC. Much newer, upgraded variant the Dutch are using now. Or the ELR software update they got too.

Great movie!

In the last section of the movie.
- it is "FIREJET" coming from the left. Likely MQM-178 drone. Designated 100M or 0M --> may be between 0-100 m altitude.
- ASTER missile is tagged "#4190", and its altitude was 4000M @ 1:17, falling down to 3000M, 2000M, 1000M and 100M right before the impact on 1:21. A direct hit (not proximity), seen in the IR vid on 1:29.

Typical trajectory of modern AAW missile, not going strait to the aim. A little bit sad, this time the target was subsonic drones, while French navy got the super-sonic one.

Also interesting the "refresh rate" of FIREJET is about 1 per second, while that of ASTER missile is faster. I guess the former is the Sampson radar signal, and the latter is the 2-way data-link info from the ASTER missile.

It could also be that the Sampson is scanning the faster-moving object more frequently/ with more T/R modules. From what little is in the public domain, it makes those decisions itself and can either interleave tasks on the same module or spread a task across multiple modules, depending on the level of detail etc. that is needed.

Good grief it took the MoD long enough to allow them to test it on such a target. Horizon was doing this 7 years ago.

It's good news, but goodness me, that confirmation that they really didn't test the 45's against a single supersonic target until now is disheartening with regards to how much high end training the UK is willing to actually fund these days.

Wonder how long until they take on more than a single target at a time?

I would love to see a T-45 ripple firing Aster missiles to engage multiple targets. It is a shame it is too expensive to do so.

You're presuming that they have enough missiles on board at any given time to engage more than one target...

Five of the six Type 45's are currently in Portsmouth.

many thanks so it looks like she will have had a busy start and finish to the year good to see the T-45's notching up days at sea. So it looks like Duncan , Defender and Dragon carrying out deployments this year

Type 45 launches in order. (Because we missed them as this forum didn't exist back then!)

HMS Daring (D32). Launched 1st February 2006 at Scotstoun. Sponsor: The Countess of Wessex.


HMS Dauntless (D33). Launched 23rd January 2007 at Govan. Sponsor: Lady Burnell-Nugent.


HMS Diamond (D34). Launched 27th November 2007 at Govan. Sponsor: Lady Johns.


HMS Dragon (D35). Launched 15th November 2008 at Govan. Sponsor: Mrs Susie Boissier.


HMS Defender (D36). Launched 21st October 2009 (Trafalgar Day) at Govan. Sponsor: Lady Massey.


HMS Duncan (D37). Launched 11th October 2010 at Govan. Sponsor: Mrs Marie Ibbotson.

HMS Dragon's maintenance period is over, leaving Portsmouth today at 09:00.

Uhm, but 5 of them was at port a week ago.
I'm afraid RN escorts sea going days are still low, although clearly improved compared to 2018. We shall not forget average seagoing days of escorts in 2014 was 144 days, while it was ~80 days in 2017-18. Very very inefficient fleet, RN is now.

I think the RN is gearing up for Carrier ops in 2021

Duncan on SNMG-2 now
Dragon returned home after 200 days away in April after leave and maintenance she back at sea and will be joining HMSQE in the US later this year
Defender has been at sea this year

the rest are in refit or being made ready for engine works

This is not a normal escort ,usually done by the RM detachment up there isit ?h
