Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Do you mean Michael Misick? The UK extradited him from Brazil back to TCI last time I heard anything about him. His trial has been dragging on since 2015-16. He lost a motion to chuck the case out middle of last year and is still doing his best to delay the full trial.ArmChairCivvy wrote:Caribbean wrote:Has the ex-TCI (disappeared) Premier been found

All I will say is that, I worked for a Caribbean bank that had a branch in TCI and I've heard a lot of stories about what he got up to (with our bank's money)
To put it in perspective, when he became premier in 2003, he declared assets of around $50,000. His current wealth is allegedly $180m. In between he earned a Government salary, or was unemployed and on the run in South America and the TCI Government sold off a huge amount of publicly-owned land at a fraction of it's true value. Draw your own conclusions.

So effectively HMS MEDWAY is performing the WIG role. I hasten to add one for which an OPV is well suited and a main armament of 30mm is more than adequate.donald_of_tokyo wrote:HMS Medway to support British Virgin Islands' border control is just good. But what is the problem here? It looks like BVI governor took very strong action.
PS How about other dependencies?

The covid-19 virus is about 100 nanometers in size. So a very very small calibre weapon would be required, and an awful lot ammunition. Targeting might be an issue...

lets start with a .22 ten barrelled Phalanx. It might not work but it would be fun to shoot.

Interesting HMS Trent coming back to UK after long deployment to Mediterranean, and will "sail for foreign shores again this winter."
It means, she was long deployed to Mid (including Gibraltar), but not "forward deployed to Gibraltar", may be.

Back in December we welcomed home ex-HMS Clyde when she returned from the Falkland Islands patrol, now she sails again as RBNS Al Zubara - part of @BDF_Bahrain. Fair winds to all on board.

No 30mm? What is going to replace it?

I don’t believe the French have got the memo to say OPVs should not be armed with anything more than a sharp stick..

For a 90m long OPV, putting a CMS on it could cost the same as the hullRepulse wrote: OPVs should not be armed with anything more than a sharp stick..

Replacement for 7 A69 "Corvettes" and 3 54m-patrol-crafts, being 10 90m-OPVs armed with something similar to the 40mm Bofors 3P. Is it up-arming or down-arming?Repulse wrote:I don’t believe the French have got the memo to say OPVs should not be armed with anything more than a sharp stick..

Anyway this means the European Patrol Corvette will not be replacing the A69s.
As we know, they have 6 80m-OPV coming soon to replace 56m-patrol-crafts deployed overseas, and still has 5 Floreal Class Surveillance Frigates to be replaced. This 5 Floreals might be replaced with European Patrol Corvettes, or modified 90m-OPVs? We shall wait for new information.

'RAPIDFire' is a strange choice of marketing by Thales, I think that gun has the slowest rate of fire of any in it's class.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
New info on French navy new OPV. Very interesting to be compared with River B2.
- displacement ~2000t
- Length ~90m
- speed 22kt
- range/endurance 5500nm/40 days
- surface-to-air radar
- sonar
- CMS
- a 40 mm RAPIDFIRE gun with EO/IR
- a flight deck, but may NOT be with a hangar.
- 140 days at sea / year, 220 days possible. Available for >300 days a year.
Note that these ships are replacing A69 corvettes and a 54m-patrol craft. At least for me, it look a bit modest in its armaments, and very similar to River B2 OPVs (other than the sonar).

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
It depends on what sort of sonar, of course. They may well mean a simple navigation/ obstacle sonar. Be nice if it was Bluewatcher or some such (hint, hint, RN).

Exactly. Very reasonable thinking = no need for hanger for a assets operated within land based air cover.Ron5 wrote:No hangar.
Another point is What sonar?
I guess it will be BlueWatcher, hull mounted FLASH, now tested onboard one of the La Fayette frigates.

Or even elsewhere.donald_of_tokyo wrote:Exactly. Very reasonable thinking = no need for hanger for a assets operated within land based air cover.
One could twist the acronym to be Observation&Patrol Vessel (bluewater or closer to coast) and for that purpose flying something in the class of 'Camcopter' is fine, just to dramatically increase the sphere of observation (at little cost - either upfront or ongoing).

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I have to say apart from the sonar I would rather have a B2 River as it is capable of carrying 6 ribs/ ORC / RRC of different types or up to 6 TEU's and 50 troops plus with its Crane it can carry up to two 11 m Unmanned USV's for MCM or ASW .donald_of_tokyo wrote:New info on French navy new OPV.
