Tidespring today at Pier Head Liverpool after completing work at Cammell Laird. Note she is fitted with Phalanx fore and aft.

I seem to remember they had problems with the wiring being of the wrong type, and some of the fire fighting system valves being sub standard. Don't recall anything else.

You can add that the builders Daewoo so enjoyed the experience of working with the MoD, they have refused to do business with them ever again (the one true fact here)

Allow me to add 2 plus 2:

Ships fail final inspection due to incorrect specification, mighty row over who should pay for fixes, ambiguous contract, MoD tries to throw weight around like it does in the UK & insists builder pays or never gets government work again, Dawaoo laughs, MoD is invited to pay up or never get the ships, MoD slams money down & is heard muttering as it stumbles out "oh shit, back to Bae for next order, what will Gideon say".

Of course the report is hidden. Humphrey covers his ass. Can't have all the other shipyards insist on an independent arbiter

Here are some details of the work carried out on Tidesurge from a recent Cammell Laird press release. Lot of work for a 3 year old ship.
Cammell Laird is also in the final stages of a 10-month programme of equipment upgrades and general repairs and maintenance for RFA Tidesurge, the third of the RFA Tideclass tankers, as part of a Through Life Support contract to maintain nine RFA vessels over the next 10 years.

Upgrades included the installation of four new 40m long exhaust systems, complete with new structural steel. A series of precision lifts were required to transfer the new exhaust system, including its 3.5 tonne silencers, into the engine room via the vessel’s funnel. The team is also upgrading the fire main (HPSW) and making improvements to the ballast water treatment system.

Parts of the vessel’s Azimuth bow thruster will also be replaced, the preparation for which involved digging a five-metre pit to accommodate the four-metre diameter thruster tunnel as it is removed prior to changing out the 5m main support tube. While in the dry dock, the sea valves, rudders and propellers will also be inspected and serviced.

The old adage: If you will be cash-constrained in the future, don't buy cheap stuff 'now' as it will cost you more in the future
... as said, is three years in 'the future'?

Question: Why can't the Tide-Class act as as storage tanker, ie provide dry stores and not fuel?

The Tide class part of the AEGIR design the AEGIR-18R replaces 1/3 of it fuel load to give it 1350 m3 of solid stores if this was applied to AEGIR-26 which is what the Tides are there fuel would go from 19000 m3 to 12700 m3 and give 2000 m3 of solid stores

It could, but not without significant modification. The holds on takers tend to be pretty simple, built to take hydrostatic pressure only. Changing those holds to accommodate point loads and intermediate decks would mean almost starting from scratch again.

Yes that is right however the Aegir-18R works by removing 1/3 of the fuel and then extending the superstructure for the dry stores plus an extra 110 berths

The fire main and exhausts work are being done on all 4 Tides. Looks like the exhausts in particular was bad speccing on the part of the MoD.

I think a Tide converted to solid supplies and made a bit more streamlined for the extra speed requirement is basically BMT/Navantia's proposal for FSS.
