I recently had the pleasure to watch from the shore, as they were practising with helos. At first I thought it was abour vertrep'ping, but gradually it became clear that non-compliant boarding was the thing being repeated, many times over.
Have always liked the shape of the ship, and the vid also nicely shows the overhang of the helo deck.
If there is one thing to criticise, it is how the double funnels restrict the size of the hangar. In the shots from behind, when the tanker and the frigate are in alignment one can see that both have exactly the same hangar. I guess with tie-downs at least one more sizeable helo can be ferried.

Look at the side "shots"... frames with such, on the video and you can see the hull tapering in, well before it meets the helo deck: hence you have a substantial overhang (only at the back, not on the sides)

Look like, the funnel is not the direct cause. There are at least twice the width of the helicopter hangar in between the two funnel. So making it a 2-helo hangar would have been quite easy. I don't see it, the corners of the flight deck also looks like its chopped off to me.

You are right. Under those chopped off bits, the hull curvature is such that it reflected light differently - and I thought I was looking all through, under that bit of the helo deck.shark bait wrote:corners of the flight deck also looks like its chopped off to me.

About the same I think. It just looks smaller on the QE due to the vast scale.

Thanks pongoglo, it now makes perfect sense. Emphasis on the length (and thereby the ferry capacity; it is not an aircraft carrier after all, but does have facilities for maintenance under cover from weather)

- I can see 12 points till the top of the hangar. This gives me, 21.6m long.
- A Merlin needs 18m long hangar. So, still maybe only for 1 Merlin.
But, surely 2 or 3 Wildcat can be embarked. The ceiling is 3-stories high. Impressive.
