Nah, I fully expect that the names will not match a lettering scheme.

As Gabe says, money is on Warspite next. Government seems to be wanting to drum up some historical significance to increase support for the program (a good move, in factual outlook).

I'm still hoping for HMS Indefatigable, if only because I love saying that word out loud. Seriously, try it now, guarentee you'll love it.

Yeah i'm kind of a word nerd...

Hey Jensy.

No indication of that no.

The Duke and Daring class are both operational today, and in 2028 it will be the Duke, Daring and Dreadnought class.

You'd almost think it's so the PM can tell the First Sea Lord to "Give our enemies the 'D'" on an authorised mission to send a taskforce.

I think it must be Friday, my mind's in the gutter today. :D

In that case how about HMS Dilbert for the T31? That's how the program seems to be ran, straight out of Dilberts world!

Also HMS Dilly-Dally for the T26?

Nelson & Drake are already taken by Portsmouth and Devonport, respectively.

HMS Deliverance.

The crew could then be known as 'The squealers'.

Perhaps:

Fury
Inflexible
Temeraire

Probably not:

Brenda
Valentine
Pickle

Can you guess one was at Trafalgar? (not its only battle honour)

For me the Temeraire would be high on the list. The Turner paining is perhaps one of the most evocative pieces of art I have ever seen.

I'd suggest that of they were looking to avoid confusing ministers then they wouldn't have given the first of class a name that could easily be mistaken for a Type 45.

I'm wondering if the Dreadnought name was deliberately withheld from the T45's names, to use it on the new SSNB's?

A good move! (If you are right; Dreadnought was a game changer, so should be "applied" with care).

I take this particular passage in the news release:
Such historical resonance will continue through the names of boats, 2, 3 and 4.
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new- ... ines-named

As a confirmation that the names will not necessarily begin with D, but just be chosen between the "big" ones. That's why i believe Warspite to be a frontrunner.
There is not much of an history of D names in the submarine world, and not many D names have comparable "historical resonance", considering that the good ones went to the Type 45s.
You might also know me as Liger30, from that great forum than MP.net was.

I wonder if Ark Royal might not be in the mix too given that there was a campaign to rename Prince of Wales not so long ago. Other than that, I agree that Warspite has to be in contention and I'd add Revenge, Intrepid and Conqueror as names with historical resonance.

Think I'd rather keep Ark Royal for a future helicopter carrier. Conqueror & Warspite on the other hand

A+ suggestion.

Dreadnought
Conqueror
Warspite

and dare I add Churchill?

Fury & Revenge sounds a tad non-PC. Ark Royal is a carrier, period. Temeraire too froggie.

Would they choose Churchill given the USN have a destroyer named after him already?

Lol as for pc, Warspite isn't exactly touchy feely & a certain country in S/American will go ape shit at the choice of Conqueror (exactly why I suggested it)

Non-PC? Bloody hell, the last Vanguard is HMS Vengeance! Okay then, how about Dreadnought, Dainty, Daffodil and Daphne, is that PC enough for you?
