Are the people incharge as weak as we have over hear r686 and cant just make the best choice for the navy needs
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
I think politics is politics wherever you are, personally this time I don't think they cant make a wrong choice all three contenders have there pro's and con's. I wont be upset ultimately whoever wins even if it is the Italians( who have been the dark horse here)inch wrote:Are the people incharge as weak as we have over hear r686 and cant just make the best choice for the navy needs
Ultimately I think there's a lot more pressure on it for the UK than AU its more to do post Brexist than most realise, but also if T26 it gets up watch for a quick free trade agreement between UK/AU. there a lot of headaches not from a capability point of view but international relations and the need for local pork barrelling, that's were the political heat will be not the capability one. While AU has never really been into the industrial offsets when it come to defence, but now that the government declared it wants more of the pie from international arms sales it has implications.
but for the best bang for our $$ going forward next 25/30 years will be the T26
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Wanting more bang for buck is ok wish but we knew how much actual buck each ship cost though

Well the way I look at it, if we can get everything we want in T26 for the current budget without hitting the contingency built into the project and get the 9 frigates, I’m a very happy man. If say won of the other ships are that much cheaper and we save money I’m happy but we won’t be getting extra ships put it that way.
Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Fair enough have to agree I would want the best ship not the cheapest but could expect though over the program of build future development of this program to require new technologies as becoming available funding for these may be tight in the future .

IMHO, Australia has way too many shipyards, considering her naval needs...R686 wrote:matt00773 wrote:A new update on the SEA 5000 decision - "$35 billion warship announcement delayed as Cabinet grapples with final project details"
For the first time mid-year rather than by end of Q2 is been given as the time for the decision. Seems there's lots of politics going on around Austal ship yards in WA being involved in the build. Also a possible tie-up with free trade deal with UK-Aus and Bushmaster export if BAE T26 wins.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-24/n ... ed/9902708
Defence Industry Minister, Christopher Pyne, won't be drawn on whether a role for Austal is being considered, but hinted a final decision on the Frigates project could still be a few weeks away.
"The Government has said that we will make an announcement about the successful tenderer in mid this year which is June and July," Mr Pyne said.
"We will definitely do that."
So it looks WA Mafia want to tie up relationships for jobs, as when the announced the OPV winner they listed Austral to share some of the work even tho they were not part of the consortium, which Fassmer and Austral could not agree on details they were left out in the cold
If that is the case its not going to be selected on the best capability and future growth margins but which consortium will have the best local industrial package, and that might just be the Italians
Fortune favors brave sir, said Carrot cheerfully.
What's her position about heavily armed, well prepared and overmanned armies?
Oh, noone's ever heard of Fortune favoring them, sir.
According to General Tacticus, it's because they favor themselves…

Agree, there is enough work to keep Osborne as the Frigate/Destroyer factory and should remain in government hands. And its up to government to modernise yards as needed. as a case in point when the last labour was in power and throwing money away like the never never it was the perfect time to expand the ship lift at Osbourne for future needs such as the new oilers could have been built hereabc123 wrote:

When consortiums win contracts they must lease the yard that way there can never be a monopoly strangle hold over government the likes of BAE over the UK.
Austal keeps trying to bulling its way in to these contracts as it knows its only a matter of time before it all goes pear shaped with the LCS, aluminium ships have there place but not we are expecting them to do.By all means keep building them for Border Force and minor warfare vessels

Another article on the SEA 5000 programme - "SEA 5000 decision delayed due to industry wrangling – report".
Still speculation but we seem to be getting closer to the truth:

Still speculation but we seem to be getting closer to the truth:
http://adbr.com.au/sea-5000-decision-de ... ng-report/
The decision on the successful SEA 5000 Future Frigate contender that was expected in early June has reportedly been delayed in order to broaden the Australian industrial footprint on the program.
The National Security Committee (NSC) is thought to have selected a winning design earlier this month and was expected to have announced it during the week of 18 June, but a June 24 report by the ABC says cabinet has delayed the announcement while it works to include WA-based Austal into the nine-ship build-program.
Austal missed out on securing an agreement with Lurssen on the SEA1180 Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) contract last month, despite government pushing the two companies together when it selected the Lurssen design. But unlike the OPV decision, the government seems reluctant to try forcing the issue a second time.
“If any of the successful tenderers wish to subcontract to Australian shipbuilders like Austal, we’re perfectly open to them doing so but that is a matter for the successful tender,” Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne told the ABC.
The report suggests Defence recommended the BAE Systems Type 26 Global Combat Ship design over the Fincantieri FREMM and Navantia F5000 proposals and this was ratified by the NSC, and that a contract for the Type 26 could be one of the first of a new free-trade agreement (FTA) with the UK following that country’s exit from the EU.
The UK is known to be interested in acquiring military equipment of Australian origin, including the Thales Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle, a new integrated battlespace communications network, and possibly the Boeing Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft. Under an FTA, agreements for some or all of these capabilities could possibly be bundled as part of a Type 26 acquisition.

Sounds like a win win. Exactly how we should do defense deals, not like the one way street to the USA.
Wonder if they want a son of Taranis?

I mean, we did test it on their ground! Although at this point I'd be extremely disappointed if the UCAV wasn't literally called "Son of Taranis" in service.shark bait wrote:Wonder if they want a son of Taranis?
It is great news on the Type 26, so one can only hope it's a clear thing and not just someone putting 2 and 2 together to get 5 based on murmurs being exaggerated.

I think the bigger problem is that they have way too small a population for the territory they have to guard.abc123 wrote: IMHO, Australia has way too many shipyards, considering her naval needs...
A population of 25m in a country nearly the size of the US, is a crazy out of whack demographic. They need at least a population of 100m to provide the economic muscle to build the armed forces of the size such a territory needs.
Unlike Canada, which has a similar population/territory problem but has the USA next door acting as overall guardian, Australia's geographical position makes it an even more severe problem.

That would be true if we shared a land border with someone, but we have a bloody big moat with a Jorn that on good days see up to 4500km away. But in saying that we need a defence force that can take the fight to the other side and able to sustain some losses, we certainly can take the fight but haven't the resources to sustain losses.
I think there room for growth but that takes money we are just getting back to 2% it would take double that to do what needs to be done though ideally we should have around 18/22 frigates destroyers to be able to achieve that sort of force but that's wishful thinking

Australia and Canada and nz should select t26 just on how good she looks compaired to the other 2 contenders ,what do they say "if it looks right it is right" and it does to me folks ,my fingers still crossed Australia gets the exporting ball rolling and goes for it .I hope with this delay its not grasping defeat out of the jaws of victory with by some account t26 possibly favoured by some in Australia and they changing their minds and going for fremm or navantia if reports were correct of course

Finally announced! Type 26 got the win and will be known as the Hunter class down under
EDIT: BAE Systems Australia say wait for official govnerment announcement at 00:00 GMT tonight but won’t say any more on the matter, however according to several news sources including the Wall Street Journal, Turnbull did indeed announce a few hours ago that BAE had won and government announcement would follow suit tomorrow (Australia time)
