Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
I think Sturgeon has just killed off shipbuilding in Scotland with this move. The T26 & T31 programs will have to be delayed until after any IndyRef2 happens (Unless May tells Sturgeon to eff off). MOD have to now start seriously considering returning shipbuilding to England.
Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
It was always going to be an inevitable consequence of Brexit, but the world has to keep on turning. And if there is going to be an Indy Ref 2 then the priority has to be a bigger No vote than the last one - so let's close down shipbuilding on the Clyde? That's really going to help!
The initial order is for three vessels. The navy needs ships, the Clyde needs the work, the union needs Scotland.
Chippy Little Englanders may not agree but, and I speak as someone with proudly Anglo-Scots ancestry, they can go and hang. They're cut from The same cloth as the Scots Nats.

Or get South Korea to build the hulls for us for a fraction of the cost and in a shorter time a la Tide class. Then ship them to the UK for fitting out. Maybe with the money saved, we could actually have 13 T26's instead of 8!

Good points. A good solution is to continue with the first batch of 3 and then take it from there....RichardIC wrote:It was always going to be an inevitable consequence of Brexit, but the world has to keep on turning. Off topic here, but May should agree that a referendum be held once the post Brexit UK-EU deal has been established
Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
If/When Scotland leave... where would be the best location to build the T26s (and T31s)?
Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
Obviously Portsmouth for surface fleet, as all the nuclear subs would go to Devonport.
Lets keep this a T26 News thead only please. Scottish indy ref political questions and debate should be in that thread. http://ukdefenceforum.net/viewtopic.php ... 397#p42397

Raytheon Anschütz advances with the Type 26 GCS Integrated Navigation and Bridge System
As Gabriele noted on Twitter, entire RN fleet gets Kelvin Hughes nav radars, yet T26 gets Terma
http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.ph ... ystem.htmlRaytheon Anschütz, a German-based leader in naval bridge system integration, has achieved several key milestones toward the Integrated Navigation and Bridge System (INBS) for the UK Royal Navy’s new Type 26 Global Combat Ships. Under the current contract, Raytheon Anschütz will deliver the INBS, including customer-specific design and development, a land-based integration facility, and a wide range of services through completion of sea trials.
...
Throughout 2016, Raytheon Anschütz achieved several program milestones, on schedule, including: several risk reducing activities, the completion of the critical design review for the INBS, and the completion of radar integration trials with a Terma 6000 radar in order to provide a solid-state IMO-compliant, I-band navigational radar. Raytheon Anschütz is also integrating Government Furnished Equipment items.

Well it could be an off-set related deal....though from what i dont know....its been quite a while since we(DK) bought something from BAE.xav wrote:As Gabriele noted on Twitter, entire RN fleet gets Kelvin Hughes nav radars, yet T26 gets Terma
Alternatively it could just be to save money....the SCANTER 6000 is likely cheaper than K-Hs Sharpeye series equivalent. Price/performance ratio have always been one of Termas strongest selling points after all.
...Or maybe it was chosen simply because its a damn good piece of kit. If its as good or better than Sharpeye i cant say, but i do know that the 6000 series is getting a lot of international sales, so it cant be half-bad.

There could also be some off-the-shelf integration that comes in handy
"C-Guard Naval Decoy System - Terma
https://www.terma.com/defense/naval-sol ... oy-system/
Terma's C-Guard decoy launching system is made to defeat stream attack with multiple missiles and torpedoes from multiple directions."
without the "hardware" that is instantaneously activated necessarily being the same as in the earlier effected integration projects

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
The River B2's got Scanter 4102's. It looks like the KH Sharpeye has been mainly used as a replacement on existing ships (it was designed as a replacement for the Type 1007, I believe). The exception being the QE's, which got the Sharpeye, IIRC. Maybe a change in direction? They seem pretty capable radars.xav wrote:entire RN fleet gets Kelvin Hughes nav radars, yet T26 gets Terma

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
River Batch 2 uses the Sharpeye for navigation and helicopter guidance, as part of fleet-wide adoption. The Scanter is their main surveillance sensor, instead. Sharpeye was also regularly included on the Tide tankers. It is the new standard fit in the fleet. The Type 26 mess up, considering the timeframes, is one of those "do the programme offices even speak to each other...?" moments.

So, considering it's allready March 2017, any ideas about when contract for Type 26 manufacturing will be signed and manufacturing started?

Couple of years time when we have bought yet another two OPV to keep the yards afloat?
Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
i can see us ending up with 6 type 26 and 8 type 31 due to budget constraints/underfunding, regardless what anybody thinks Brexit will hit our economy and the knock on affects will hit our armed forces, we badly need to start replacing the type 23s and we need to ensure the new ships don't suffer the same problems as the Type 45s

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
I share the concern, but for it to materialise two of the T31s would need to be able to take the TAS, since there are 8 available and it's been made clear that this is the minimum required....FuNsTeR wrote:i can see us ending up with 6 type 26 and 8 type 31 due to budget constraints/underfunding, regardless what anybody thinks Brexit will hit our economy and the knock on affects will hit our armed forces, we badly need to start replacing the type 23s and we need to ensure the new ships don't suffer the same problems as the Type 45s

France & UK Launch Next-Gen Missile Project with MBDA to Replace Harpoon/Scalp/Exocet by 2030
I wonder if they will go for speed (Brahmos / Zyrkon) or smart & stealth (LRAM / NSM) ... maybe both ?
http://www.navyrecognition.com/index.ph ... -2030.htmlToday in London, the United Kingdom and France have signed an agreement to launch a joint concept phase of the Future Cruise / Anti-Ship Weapon (FC/ASW) programme with MBDA. The agreement was signed by Laurent Collet-Billon, head of France’s Defence Procurement Agency (DGA - Direction générale de l’armement), and Harriet Baldwin, UK Minister of Defence Procurement.
...
Laurent Collet-Billon said: “We are launching today a major new phase in our bilateral cooperation, by planning together a generation of missiles, successor to the Exocet, Harpoon, SCALP and Storm Shadow. The FC/ASW (future cruise/anti-ship weapon) programme’s aim is to have by around 2030 a new generation of missiles. This future capability is strategic, industrially as well as operationally. This new programme will be the backbone of our “One Complex Weapons” initiative.”

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
Surely delay is expected. Then, 2035 will be "nominal", and none negligible possibility to extend to 2040. RN can enjoy a one whole generation of ASM/cruise missile as a "interim" solution. Let's go for, TLAM B4 for T26 and NSM for T23/T45 right now!xav wrote: Laurent Collet-Billon said: “....aim is to have by around 2030 a new generation of missiles. ....”
If not, RN will be going on with no cruise missile nor ASM for as ling as 20 years. No, not acceptable.

Zyrkon is the new hypersonic anti-ship missile the russian navy is developing.
