@Jake1992, It has a big twin door hanger, but unlike most naval vessels it is under the bridge with the doors opening towards the bow.

@RichardIC, my guess is the same

Iv seen that and it’s interesting but can’t find out what size helos the hanger abd doors can accommodate, Iv found the flight deck can handle a chinook though

I looked at this design a few years ago and the only measurement for the hanger I was able to find was that it was capable of holding 4 ISO containers.

It should hold a Wildcat but it appears a Merlin would be simply too large as currently configured. The double hanger doors may even preclude a Wildcat.

As far as I can make out from the virtual tour (which has a "measure" facility), it's 15.5m long by 11m wide, with each door being c. 4m wide

It's quite often the height of the hanger door that makes a design too small for Merlin. Leander for one example.

It's a no-go for Merlin I'm afraid as currently configured.

Two Wildcat or similar, though

I like the RRS SDA and see it being a good starting point for such a vessel ( if we are thinking along the right lines ) but can see the need for a hanger redesign as I can see the RN wanting such a vessel to be able to operate merlin size helos even just to help with loading and unloading of goods let alone growth room for future UAVs

I suspect that the new vessel will be a mothership for USV, as well as sea bed mapping. Not sure that it would need to be so big for exploring the littoral waters of the UK.

Minimum height for a Merlin is 5.6m. Length 16.5m.

A problem with a hanger with forward facing doors is that wind and turbulence makes life inside the hanger very difficult if the doors are open while the ship is underway. Not a problem for RRS Sir David Attenborough, as she will mostly be using her helicopters while stationary. But more of an issue for a Navy ship.

I would like to see this vessel of possibly vessels having a more active wartime role such as Command Ship for MCV groups, providing additional capabilities such as aviation and even more elaborate repair facilities for unmanned platforms.

Could it also serve as a "Royal Yacht" when needed? :D

In that case, they need to be ice breaker. Something like Canadian Harry DeWolf-class?
