Re: Multi-Role Research Vessel
Would agree the two would replace HMS Scott, but would argue that HMS Protector is sufficient for its current role (albeit without the hangar space that HMS Endurance). The threat of Russian (and other) interference in underwater cables etc is an increasing one that impacts primarily the North Atlantic, not the South Pole.
Personally, I’d go for an extended Echo class design with a larger flat deck for off board systems to be built by Appledore.

With the seeming focus on deep sea operations and data cable protection, perhaps also a replacement for HMS Challenger, after a very long 'capability gap'.Tempest414 wrote:No I think they will replace HMS Scott and Protectordonald_of_tokyo wrote:So they will replace HMS Echo and Enterprise?

Re: Multi-Role Research Vessel
Surely the answer for this is a modified Oil Rig Supply Vessel? A MPSV?

Not sure about the 'adequacy' of that answer as the 'threat' reaches up to 6 km down https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_r ... sel_Yantar
Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

Re: Multi-Role Research Vessel
If these “UUV motherships” ships are capable of conducting deep sea Survey, Surveillance and ASW duties in the North Atlantic it would in my view be a massive boost the UK’s capabilities.
Not only could they map the ocean floor, protect the underwater cables and deliver deep sea recovery, they could also cover CASD.
Question is, if they do this they would become high value targets - what level of defence would be required? I would assume at least small caliber guns and Point Air Defence?

According to STRN's review of the year:
So maybe this is in the wrong thread. But with so little to go it seemed this was possibly a reference to the mystery Multi-Role Research Vessel rather. Two hydrographic vessels will be purchased to replace HMS Scott, but with additional capabilities to monitor and protect undersea cables.
