Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Might it be the idea to have a few export orders on the drumbeat for T31? Either that or T32s elbowing their way in from somewhere else than the two facilities for which the two (very rough!) drum beats have been indicated Interesting indeed - just for my curiosity - have you any sources for those ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The Gvmnt has indicated (thru 'intended drum beat', and not allowing for slightly different start times) that for every T26 there will be 1.5 of 'other' surface combatants - assume we get the full 8 of the former - then there will be 12 of the other (and the 6 AAW will still be around) Oops! How do...

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

I'm coming closer and closer to the view T32 will be an escort / amphib hybrid similar to the absalons.

Would explain where the budget (not yet announced) will come from if they're to replace Albion / Bulwark also.

Semantics aren't too significant as ever, a combatant is a combatant and it can do stuff.

The stuff it does depends on the fit, nothing else!

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Is it possible to just blow up the Absalon blueprints by a factor of 1.5? Unfortunately not. Bigger than Absalon, but not quite Too big, too slow and too expensive but the concept is sound. Add a floodable well dock and it's not a Frigate IMO. Tbf the San Antonio's only come in at £1.2bn, if we cou...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

IF the primary role of the new Type 32 were to be escort to the LRG, what capabilities would the T32 require? Given the clean sheet of paper my first query would be, is the LSS even necessary? Could the LRG be formed around multiple T32's if the escort was designed correctly? Obviously that depends...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I guess the question its what is the T32 for? That's probably the fastest way to work out what form the T32 may take. A process of elimination: 1. The T32 suggests General Purpose but what is a GP Frigate going to look like in two decades time? 2. We already have a perfectly serviceable GP Frigate ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

As others have already said, considering T32 is outside of the recently announced funding time period, and the fact its growth above the recent baseline level - it may be fair to say it's end result will depend on the economic situation in 4 years. Personally, I think there's a significant opportuni...

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Credible points but I think it depends entirely on whether they continue with the new shipbuilding model.

With the rise of GFE the MoD seems to be a much more intelligent customer, only time will tell if it works out. Either way, it's broken the inflation cycle.

If we turn it into a pleasure yacht could probably get it for 200m GBP.

Not sure we want pleasure yachts though - what kind of specification were you thinking?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

2 more T26 bringing the total to 10 was the 6 quoted in this thread a misquote? I'm all for speeding up delivery of T26, but only if the shipyard remains busy until T4X. or will any speeding up just keep the door open to interleave or totally move over to the production of AAW destroyers - should B...

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

From what I have heard today, the intention is to bring the total number of UK escorts up to 24. I believe the RN pitched for 26, but will no doubt be quite happy with 24. It also appears that the 5 extra ships will be GP frigates, not ASW frigates and not AAW destroyers (either of which would cost...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

That's the idea. Glad to hear it. The Arrowhead 140 should be seen as a sticking plaster stop gap to get RN and the MoD out of a bottleneck. IMO it is not the design to form the backbone of the Royal Navy for the first half of the 21st century. It's definitely a pretty modern ship by American stand...

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

This would be a fantastic thing, ofcourse. Depends if you think more AAW is needed rather than increased ASW. If the T32 turns out to be an Iver Huitfeildt with 16x Mk41's, a Mk45 and 8 or 16 NSM 's then great especially if hybrid propulsion is added but work really needs to ramp up on off board AS...

They're definitely likely to go for the lowest risk option, and this may mean the T32 is quite close to the Iver Huidtfelt in Danish service.

This would be a fantastic thing, ofcourse.

Re: Type 31 & Type 32 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Watching Boris at PMQ's, I think he only mentioned the Type 32 in the context of his "shipbuilding renaissance" and said the RN would have a fleet of 8 Type 26 and 5 Type 31. I don't remember there being any mention of the 32 in RN service. Seems more like an export derivative of a design...

They're probably looking to win the polish and NZ upcoming competition's.

Best way to win is to have it on the water, hot pot ready.
