Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

I doubt the carrier will have 2 T45 and 2 T26 with her.. apart from in an unlikely senario that we enter a major operation on our own (ala falklands)
I think most of the time it will be 1 T45 + NATO escort or a T26. How many escorts did the Invincibles usually have?

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

From what I have read the defence media seems to be in agreement that the T-31 will not have a major ASW role and will only have a hull mounted sonar and the sensors of any rotary assets carried, the flight deck able to support a Merlin but the hanger only big enough for a Wildcat. HMS Waste of Mon...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

The T31 is surely to keep escort numbers up but maybe the govt do want them as patrol frigates. As others have said this will only compound our escort numbers further. This would be rather short sighted seeing as we're going to launch 2 large carriers over the next 5 years. Although we dont know wha...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

Were the T21 really a 'cheap' GP frigate? Maybe it was cheap in terms of costs. I don't know. I hear a lot of folk claiming the RN don't need another vessel like that. But it still had a main gun. Excocet SSM. Torpedo launchers. Seacat (although obsolete). They were quick. I guess the thing that let...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

maybe its only 60% because BaE are under pressure to prove the technology works to avoid a repeat of the Type45 debacle. And also Industries mistrust of the MoD actually ordering any significant number of vessels in the short term possibly even the medium term. Or has there been a major rethink and...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

We've talked about the Type 22/III as being the best general purpose frigate we've had. But there is no way we will end up with the T31 being the same size and capabilities as this as the cosr would prob be more than a T26 itself. We should have gone down this route at the start and made the t31 an ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

I agree that the proposed type 31 should be centred around ASW but perhaps witn wildcat for but hanger built for merlin size. 5" gun and Camm. no other fancy bits like mission bay or even CIWS which may also keep the costs down. The type 26 may be a gold plated ASW platform but it can have scop...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

Been reading this thread and i agree with the last few posts. Traditionally our ASW frigates are nowhere as big as the cruiser size type 26 ie Leanders / Type 23 etc.. so it seems we have gone the opposite by specialising our cruiser' for ASW and then build a lighter frigate for a general purpose ro...
