Re: USA Armed Forces
Makes one think what we should have had from the type 45 program i.e 8 ships armed with 1 x 114mm , 2 x 30mm 2 x Phalanx , 64 VLS and 8 x Harpoon / NSM and we could have 6 of these ship now It does, DDG(X) is going to be a pretty potent surface combatant as it tries to straddle the line between the...

Re: USA Armed Forces
Initially, the ship would feature a 32-cell Mk-41 Vertical Launch System forward of the superstructure that could be swapped for 12 larger missile cells capable of fielding the Pentagon’s emerging hypersonic weapons being developed for the Navy, Army and the Air Force. The current DDG-51s field 96 ...

Re: Franco-German-Spanish FCAS/SCAF Programme News and Discussion
Thanks for the link SW1, that was an interesting read and puts an interesting spin on these German rumours. If Germany wants to keep up with France from a technical perspective, if exports aren't forthcoming then they need to put up the cash for development themselves.

Re: Franco-German-Spanish FCAS/SCAF Programme News and Discussion
Janes is now reporting the Luftwaffe/F-35 issue that's been rising https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/f-35-eurofighter-ecr-back-in-the-mix-for-germany?fbclid=IwAR0UtYEr7liDxLhFGeLsnZ2qs9lan-EYAK2lcSYuI4yYF2Y0-N2pwPIxkzg The extended article outlines that there's a few reasons why F-35 ha...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I agree with the above but the force I have shown would the tip of the spear not the other way round i.e they would not try to sneak across on civv ships Ah but that's the challenge I'm making, there's a reasonable amount of evidence that suggests that the force they have for the 'tip of the spear'...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I am sure it is more needed than planned but lets not forget that China has 3 x LHD ( troops carried not known but 800+ would be a good guess ) 8 x LPD's ( each able to carry 800 troops ) 18 x LST's ( each able to carry 250 troops ) 11 x land ships ( each able to carry 500 troops ) The initial forc...

Re: Italian Armed Forces
A potential customer\partner through MBDA Italy for FCASW? Potentially! I can't remember if they migrated Storm Shadow off their Tornados onto Typhoon yet, but if they have then they're a potential market for the Air sector, it'd make it that much easier to export to the Navy. Doesn't the latest ve...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Agree, but with total seven boats and if approximately max 3 to 4 available at any one time? (remember recent comment that only two were available, one with the CSG), with these penny packet numbers the strategic mobility is very, very compromised. It is compromised, I agree, but SSKs don't solve t...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Yet is seems that according to some sources the RN is looking at unmanned SSKs rather that is being discussed here. Maybe they think that being unmanned they won't affect the number of SSNs the RN operates going forward. Who knows? I buy into XLUUVs supporting the submarine force a lot more. There'...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
The last Astute Class, HMS Agincourt is unlikely to be ready until at least 2026, if not later. Then Barrow will be busy building the 4 Dreadnought SSBN's. The House of Commons Defence Commitee is currently expecting that the Astute-replacement Class SSN won't be ready until 2040, and based on rece...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Didn’t say they did, just highlighted the RN deployed them globally to major conflict as well up into the traditional hunting grounds of the barent sea You're right, i'm being unfair. I'm not anti-SSK, I just feel I have to challenge their suitability for the RN with budgets being the way they are

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
And yet an RN ssk saw service in the falklands war and a couple in the gulf war in 1991. All of which did swimmer delivery which, thanks to Chalfont and SDV enabling bigger boats to deploy swimmers without getting as close to the shore, isn't the party piece it used to be. The reason they go with s...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
The IJN operates a fleet of ~ 30 Oyashio, Soryu and Taigei class SSKs, whereas the RN has 7 SSN's with all the attendant awkward nuclear realities and expenses entailed. One look at a map will show you why that is the case. Australia, who is looking at exactly the same threat but with a much more d...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
I am not trying to say that a SSK should be used to clover one spot in the case of the 4 I outline for the home fleet and areas they could operate I was thinking more along the line if we needed to we could deploy 2 to the Med or 3 to the North sea or three into the Black sea as seen fit Your 4 SSK...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
I would agree that all of the above is up for debate but just because NATO allies cover something dose not mean we should not if this was a sound argument then we don't need Carriers as the US a NATO ally has 10 of them all bigger and better than ours also the argument of what to cut is a simple on...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
For me if we were to go for a SSK we should join a program that is up and running with work share i.e building the front end and some sensor work. Also we should go for 6 with 4 home based to cover the North sea , Baltic and Med , Black sea and 2 forward deployed one in Singapore and the other in G...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
I was nt proposing "globally capable SSK". And I gave examples of what we could use SSK for. e.g. for initial training and for use in shallower waters such as UK, North Sea, Mediterranean i.e etc. But that's what the RN wants, boats capable of global deployment in support of British inter...

Fair comment. My proposal assumes, that "building SSN" can be separated into "building the reactor" and "other parts/systems". I understand, at least for now, "building the reactor" is the dominant factor? Probaby in theory but not in practice, these things a...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
If you want more nuclear boats then expand Barrow, why waste time standing up a new firm, build up a handful of a new class of boats then integrate them? I've never really got the whole 'SSKs for the UK' argument. The RN is a global force and squeezed out SSK's as fast as they could when nuclear tec...

Re: Franco-German-Spanish FCAS/SCAF Programme News and Discussion
Copied over from the Tempest thread Not sure if this is relevant here, but the Germans may be considering the F35 again. Not sure how this would affect the FCAS? https://mobile.twitter.com/AlexLuck9/status/1479769475138215937 The challenge for the Luftwaffe is that a development of Typhoon or F/A-18...
