Re: Turkish Armed Forces
Oh I am well aware that Israel is no angelic state, just look at the later end of Operation Peace for Galilee in 1982. I get a bit annoyed though when the Palestinians in Gaza or more rightly Hamas use their civilians as shields, for which their population thank them, and then blame Israel when some...

Re: Turkish Armed Forces
Don't go quoting Iraq, more Iraqis have been killed by other Iraqis than by western forces by a very substantial margin, in fact that goes for any country the West has intervened in the locals seem far better at killing each other than the UN/NATO forces as they have no ROE to follow. How many bombs...

Well you wouldn't want a T-31 doing either of those jobs without being escorted themselves.

In RAF service the Canberra served longer than the Spitfire. I believe the Spitfires had gone by the mid to late fifties so you are looking at around thirty years service I think.

Well they would most likely be shipped by one of the Points so they may take the skirt armour off but little else. for the Gulf there was a fitting out workshop near the dock's to bring the Challenger 2s up to TES, prior to them moving out to staging areas. I believe it was a mix of Contractors and ...

Re: Section infantry weapons
The unit members seem to like the handling qualities of the L119A2/3, it being ambidextrous for one thing as well as lighter, but beyond that I can only the the Ghost of sins past is still hanging over the L85. Also maybe these units think there affiliation with the SF and the latter's non use of th...

Everyone else who is either interested in a T-31 based design or is being courted to buy it is being offered a far more capable design that is equipped as a true warship rather then the "Gunboat" we are buying. It is almost a repeat of the T-26 where Australia and Canada seem to be buildin...

Not really surprising as the majority of the fleet is nearly 40 years old and has been worked hard, especially over the last decade or so. Hopefully over the next ten years or so additional new build maybe purchased though more like the "F" model than the all singing and dancing Block II a...

We were usually told to help prepare spares etc for a deployment but were not told where they were going. When we were shown a film showing a glimpse of operations in one area together with its backing rock track it was pretty unique. The only operations we did hear about were mainly simple mapping ...

Re: Section infantry weapons
With "Core" Infantry I was describing the majority of the Infantry within the British Army as against Special Forces, Their Support Group, 42 Commando, and so on. There seems to be a trend where if offered the chance, many units prefer to change to the L119A2/3 rather than retain the L85A3.

Sorry got my wires crossed you are right with 380 mln. Euros price tag for the four Helicopters and "Comprehensive", support package. The 90 mln. Euros was the agreed off set deal. These Merlins are certainly pricey meaning we will never order any more, but it is probably the best rotary A...

If one is 'showing the flag' e.g. in Bab el-Mandep and gets a shore-fired anti-ship missile (has happened ) coming at you, then having a SeaCpetor for close-in defence is quite handy Well that is the sort of location you shouldn't use a T-31 to show the flag, instead you need to use a proper Escort...

Very nice video of the last two displays of an RAF Canberra, a PR-9, as well as an explanation of its last roles and capabilities. I was part of the Team at what became DE&S at RAF Wyton, managing the spares and repairs to the Avon 2067 engines and their starters. Regularly visited RAF Marham to...

Back to the future! I would still prefer turreted 120mm Mortars such as NEMO within Infantry Battalions and heavier platforms like the MAN/Archer 155mm and HIMARS providing the long range fire for both Light and Heavy BCTs not to mention the Deep Fires BCT. A CEP of 120m is simply no longer good en...

A lot depends on what happens over the pond in the USA. If the US does actually adopt the 6.8mm then the prospects for anything new developed that does not use the same ammunition will be limited, within NATO especially. We will be in the same situation as when some of NATO used 7.62mm and others us...
