Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
where did the image of a Leander with a 4.5 inch gun come from is it CL/ BAE if so that is that must be the RN saying what it wants I took it straight from CL/BAE's new web site, http://www.leanderfrigate.com/design/gallery , second image in. Its even clearer from the new CGI on the main page. I tr...

OK , so Ive just spent part of the bank holiday ( sad I know!) trying to decipher CL's new site and the team Leander bid. Do we now think they are the only game in town? Since the MoD made their somewhat surprising announcement to suspend the whole thing and then the re-start happened Babcock seem t...

Interesting , and a really impressive turn around from RN decommissioning and return to service under the Brazilian flag - under twelve months? Well done them! What are the landing craft hanging from her davits, their own type or did they buy her LCVP ? Ocean will always be my all time favorite RN s...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Just managed to watch the Leander video on the new site (DII wouldn't let me view) and it most definitely is a 4.5 Mk 8. Looks like with the exception of Phalanx nearly all the hardware would appear to have been ported over from the T23 ; Artesan, CAMM, 4.5 inch gun , Harpoon canisters , even decoy ...

Note that it states, Electric drive speed is 12knots, with 700kWx2 = 1400 kW power. About time we have a modern propulsion system proposed for the next generation! Finally this might be something that is ASW capable, it is just a little bit slow. The Damen Sigma 10514 LRP 2,575 tons 107 x 14 x 3.75...

Re: Echo Class Hydrographic Survey Ships (RN)
Anyone else think that the Echo Class are crying out for a single Phalanx fitted aft of the bow and forward of the heli pad in front of the bridge? Clearly not as a permanent fixture for all deployments but perhaps drawn from the same pool as the RFA's. Always struck me as odd how we routinely fit P...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]
Problem with the Mk8 is there isn't the slightest chance of any advanced long-range precision guided rounds ever being developed for it. And that's the future. So retire it ASAP. However it's clearly not worthwhile to fit Mk45 to the T23s. I really think the fleet needs an advanced 57mm or 76mm. Re...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]
So, virtually, it is only Artisan and CAMM, and 30mm guns, which could be re-used from T23. I'd also prefer a 5" gun but that seems to be ruled out on expense. Sad. A 3" seems rather weenie. Wouldn't scare me much either on another ship or land. I don't buy the claims they have a useful A...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
I wasn't expecting any concept work or mock up to be unveiled, so that's a surprise. I have to state though that I'm completely underwhelmed by the Tempest design. The BAE Replica concept from many years ago looked more advanced and sleeker than this. I trust this is just an early idea that will qu...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
I think the debate about whether Babcock can deliver this ship for the required £250m is pretty semantic. Surely they wouldn't have bothered if they thought they could not? The fact that the Dane's built there's for £308m in today's money back in 2008 is also a bit of a red herring methinks. The Ive...

It seems like Poland is saying they arrived 4th. Challenger is 7th, just ahead of the Ukrainians, at least according to Wikipedia. And QRH social media conveniently fell silent on the matter. Don't listen to Wikipedia, there's been people shifting places on it all day, mostly to put the US team hig...

Arrowhead 120 states it has a Merlin capable flight deck and hangar for SH-60 NH-90 if type 31 is to be a true export success these should be a base line for this part of the ships capability. The sales chap seemed to have little idea for how this ship could be used it was almost like you can throw...
